Our pair still have their two chicks (only a week or so old) plus 5 eggs which I'm not removing till the end of this month (in case they hatch and also for the chicks stability)

Today, however, mum and dad were at it again. She came out of the box for a bath and a feed and then there they were 'playing piggy back'.
Is this usual, or is it a sign that they're poss going to abandon the family they have and are starting again???

Hi Dusty,
I wouldn't be to worried they are probably practicing for their next clutch. You may have to provide them with another box as kakarikis often start their next clutch well before the first one has fledged. The hen will often start laying when the young are about three weeks old and the cock will continue to feed the babies. It always pays to keep an eye on the young to make sure they look well and are being fed. The system that they use makes it hard when it is time to give them a rest as there is always something happening, anyway good luck with your brood, hope things all go smoothly. Pray Cheers Jenny
