This is probably a dumb/novice question, but this is what I'd like to know:

Can someone who is in 'the know' draw a table/make a list or some such of what Kakariki mutation/species can breed with what Kakariki mutation/species so that I do not accidentally breed a hybrid?

I plan on getting as many different mutations/species as I can & don't want to hybridise.

Karen,
There is no such thing as a dumb question. The answer to your question is in fact fairly simple for Aussie breeders. As long as you only use the mutations from the red fronted species there are no problems. All of the mutations in red fronted can be combined without any problems. As far as the yellow front species go there are currently few mutations available so it would be easier to stick with the reds in the initial stages. Of course you still need to outcross in mutations to keep fertility and size of birds etc in check. Apart from that enjoy. There are some great mutations to get you started.

Simply
In Aussie there are 3 species
Most common has a red crown
More rare the yellow crown
And very rare an I beliebe maybe in the Brisbane area somewhere the Forbes..If they are still exist.

There are pics of these in the gallery

DONOT Cross a red crown and yellow crown

Identify your stock and prosective purchases for hybridisation...a mix of yellow and red crown feathers of varing degress..not 100% accurate but if able to veiw the rest of the breedrers stock it would show in their other birds
Examples in the gallery here

Thanks heaps for that!
I feel better now knowing what I can & can't breed. I can now plan my birds' future breeding program!
