I've just last weekend put 2 pairs into my budgie aviary. My budgies are done breeding for this year (except 2) and I've removed the boxes except for the late breeders.
Ever since I put the Kiki's in one of the hens has been entering the budgies breeding box which is way too small for her. The problem is there are 2 X 3-4 week old budgies in there and their mother. The hen hasn't harmed the budgies.
What should I do? Will the budgies be safe? - as soon as they fledge the box will be gone.
Karen,
I would remove the Kakariki until the budgies have fledged and are independant. It is possible that the Kakariki will accidently kill the young budgies by exploring the box. They could end up trampling them. There is also a chance that the cock birds may turn aggressive if they want to nest and that is the only box available. You could try putting a couple of larger cockatiel boxes in the aviary also. That may distract the Kakariki long enough for the budgies to hatch.
We have had Kakariki in aviaries with finches, burkes while they are nesting...the kikes are generally curious and destroy the nests (espec finch nests). The dont worry about quail thu. _________________ My Spelling is Not Incorrect...It's 'Creative'
Thanks for the replies, I will remove the Kiki's. Yesterday when I was cleaning the budgies' box and had the babies in my hand the male kiki came up to me and grabbed the feathers on top of the babies head and pulled some off.
