Hi
All 7 chicks have now flown the nest and are doing fab and looking cute. My question is how long is it before they can/should leave mum and dad? The last of the 7 flew the nest at the weekend but some of them have been out now for almost 2 weeks. Dad and sometimes mum are feeding them occasionally but they are becoming more and more independant by the day. My avery isn't big enough for all of them at the moment so it is abit crowded and I'm getting worried. When I bought my pair of Kakarikies from a local pet shop in July, the owner said they were 4 months old and they wouldn't breed until next year. So I thought I would have plenty of time to build another avery or onto the one I have already built. Within 3 weeks of them being in the avery they were breeding resulting in 7 wonderful and funny bundles of mischief.
Also, I have read other forums which says they have lots of kakarikis in an avery without nest boxes and everything is fine. Do they not breed which then results in fighting to protect teritory etc? My 2 didn't have a nest box at first but still laid eggs.
General rule of thumb is when the red iris develops u can wein off. It can be done earlyer, but I personally don't believe this is a good practice.
The iris appears about 2 weeks after leaving the nest, thu this can depend on the design of the nesting box.
As far as breeding in groups goes, several of us are caryring out trials.
Generally once a pair go to nest they will become very territorial.
Thu at the moment we have a pair that has breed, the siblings remained in the flight, they breed again with no problems except the male will demand 1st go at the food supply. Several of the siblings are even sleeping in the nesting box along with the hen and her eggs/chicks
This is the 2nd time with different pairs we have seen this, thu in previous yrs with different pairs they have been very territorial.
All I can conclude is sometimes it works other time it doesn't, may just depend on the pair....or food supply.
The previous times we did only feed large amounts of veggies once a day, the times there is no problem 2x sometimes 3x a day.
Over crowding: how big is your flight? _________________ My Spelling is Not Incorrect...It's 'Creative'
