Hi.
Can some one help?
I am a novice and I have an outside aviary 2m x 2m half covered with a pair of peach faced lovebirds. I have just inherited from a person that was emigrating: 1 cock & 2 hen Rosselas plus a pair of Kakarikis. She is mainly yellow with the odd patches of light green and has a red forehead.
He is deep green with a red forehead.
After only two days she has gone straight into a nest box and comes out to get fed by the cock.
I assume there will be eggs soon.
Question: Think
How long before eggs hatch?
Are these the basic colours of a Kakariki?
Is it correct that all type of parrot birds will mix?
The average all year round temps here in Southern Spain are 21c about 71 fh.
Do the Kakarikis need heating in the winter?

1) Usually between 21 and 28 days AFTER the female has laid the last egg and she starts to incubate them

2) There are a lot of different colours for Kakariki birds, check the GALLERY

3) Not necessarily, depends on the personality of the birds you are trying to mix. Birds are like humans, they might get on with everyone else, but they might not.

4) Not really, the Kakariki is prone to heat exhaustion though, dont keep them too hot, around 17C to 22C is preferable, but they can put up with the cold. They are native of New Zealand, which temperatures get quite low in the winter.

I dont think love birds mix well with any kind of birds they are very aggressive.....and are known for pulling others babies out of the nest.....It also sound like the aviary is a bit crowded to me....especially for breeding

I agree 100%

Love birds and Rosella will not mix well with anything, of any birds that don't they would be the top of the list.
Then throw a couple kakariki in that get very territorial not long after going to nest....
I hate to say if I was going to pick a worst senio of mixed birds...this would very well be it..sry
U NEED to remove the love birds ASAP, even if have to put in smaller cages.
The Rosella will eventually have to be moved soon also, they are , like kakariki more of a aviary bird than cage bird....the Kakariki will 'have them on' very soon..not damage them as love birds do, just constant stress to all the birds with the kakariki chasing them all the time.
DON'T 'wait and see' u will regret doing so...
Basically u need a couple small cages and knock together a temporary small aviary about 1m x 1mx 2m H fast...
Another concern is introducing new birds to yours with out an isolation period, not doing so is asking for trouble...the temp aviary could be used for that later.

Kakariki would be the most tolerant of weather, from snow to mid 30 C plus..somewhere here I have high low/ave temps for NZ conditions, run a forum search for weather or temperature

Oh and w3c to our community, wish we had better news for u thu.
