Hi,
Hoping someone has an idea why this happens. Our Hen has laid 2 eggs, she has been sitting in the box constantly except when she comes out to feed quickly.

Yesterday she came out of the box and one of the eggs was actually stuck to her, she removed it and it was okay so I put it back in the nest box. This morning the egg was broken on one side as if it was stuck to her again and she broke it getting it off.

Can anyone explain why this might happen, is it intentional in that the egg is not viable and it's the hens way of disposing or has she taken too many feathers off that the eggs will stick to her.

Any information will be much appreciated.

thanks
Mel

Taking to many feathers off .. think u are referring to the bare patch on the breast...which is a combination of wearing feathers off and the rest being parted... normal

Having a egg stuck to her is very unusual... I have never heard of that happening.
I would assume a egg has cracked, leaked a little which when dries is like glue.
There are usually at least a couple infertile eggs in every batch....my self and several other have a theory on this... they are meant to be, and act as hot water bottles for young chicks when see leaves the nest, and they prop themselves up on the eggs to raise their heads to be feed when very young and week.
