I really love the wild natural green colour of the red fronted Kakariki.

But I have noticed that some are a stunning almost iridescent green while others are a dull green, is this due to different stages of development (dull green are still younger) or is there considerable variation in the natural wild green colour.

I should add that the picture to the left of this message is a fine example of the lovely bright green I am talking about :)

I would have added this to the original post but......where's the edit button?

there should be an edit button top right of the post
That example was one of our original full wild colour kakariki we breed around 10 or 12 years ago...
We only breed wild colors .. and even then occasionally one is slightly lighter but still has its iridescence sheen.
They have full colour when leave the nesting box.
What we have noticed is the 'sheen' deepness of colour is influenced by diet and health.
The crown not so much, which in our blood lines varies between a deep red to almost crimson.

Read the thread on "what do you feed..."
And there are also comments , long time ago , where breeders have introduced apple cider vinegar and vinegar in their diet maintenance programs (quick search " block on the left) increasing the over all condition , health and we being of the birds.

We see the same influence in out Crimson wings and king parrots

"Dad" the kakariki in the avatar is still producing offspring , on his 3rd female now....would have produced well over 250 healthy adults now

Thanks for the reply, I've found a lovely green red front Kakariki and a yellow front as well at a bird and fodder store, they say they are both females, I would prefer a male, anyway I've posted a photo of both birds in the aviary at the pet shop....do they look like males or females?

I like both but I think the natural wild red front green is the nicest.

I can't find the edit button on the top right of the post, is this only present while typing and disappears after submitting the post?

All I can find on the top right of the post is the 'Quote' button.

Do not mix red and yellow crown.. and get pure colur crowns... see thwe gallery re impure/ hybrid birds.

Hard to tell from a distance but that RC in rt5he middle looks like a nice male.
