Hi I have just bought a pair of Red Crowned Kakariki's the pet shop said they were a mutation with them being yellow as they are normally green. He also said they were 6 months old and were a male and female and they should be fine as long as I don't put a nest box in there cadge is this true? I have being trying endlessly to get them to come to me but they just hide and when they are out of the cadge they hide at the top of the curtain rail. The one that is ment to be the males calls to the female constantly. They fly around the house in what looks like a blind panic iam so scared they are going to get hurt
I have put fresh fruit and veg in there bowl that they won't touch I've put a water bath in there cadge which they won't go near. I would be so great full if any one could give me any advice and guidance as even though we have only had them a week iam already ver attached. Many thanks
How big is the cage?
Being from the same source at the same time the chances are they are brother/ sister. It is very doubtful they would be suitable for breeding, so why buy a male/ female?
With no nesting box , they should not go to nest.
As to not eating good diet...could be because they where not raised on good diets and/ or hand raised on formula...they will need to be weaned over months to good diet. Further detailed info.. make use of the "search block" on the left.
As to taming, its about trust and the owner being the alpha male..
Again using the search block.. further info on taming, hand training and even how to get the birds back in the cage easier.
Sry about referring u to the search block, but after around 10yrs typing the same old.. over and over... _________________ My Spelling is Not Incorrect...It's 'Creative'
Hi there, The cage is (H) 157 x (W) 80 x (D) 61 cm I let them out for a couple of hours a night I would let them have free flight but I have two dogs and I don't want to chance them getting hurt. Thank you for getting back to me it must be very frustrating being asked the same questions time and time again. I think they are siblings two and they are mating now . When I let them out they don't really fly they panic and get to the top of the curtain and hide do you think that's because there not used to being out? Also will she lay an egg now that they have mated even though there is no box? I just want them to be happy and be a part of our family!
Many thanks
Lianne

yes and smell the dogs.
Many ppl who have dogs , even cats have their pets co habit together nps.
Its not much different to introducing new birds into a flight.
Our king house parrot and the cat, a russian blue, about as an aggressive hunter as one can get got on fine. Even when on \holiday both still had full range of the house... never locked in a cage.
But the cat outside, very different animal, very territorial, any other animal bird..yet knew not to touch the fish in the pond and the birds bathing in the steam next to it....
Maybe its also about the environment they behave that way??
I dont know why the pet shop would recommend a male/ female when breeding was not the intention.. 2 males would have been a far better, sensible idea...
I dont know what it is ... caged, maybe hand reared birds tend to mate without nesting boxes indiscriminately.. then lay eggs anywhere...yet out flight breed, parent raised birds, unless there is a nesting box they dont.
There is a very distinct process.
No nest box .. they may pair off...thats it
nesting box(s) the male checks out if suitable....if thats ok , he then invites a female to check out and inspect...if thats ok , and she is also happy with the male she will then allow him to mate.
Each of these things / steps are taken over 2 to 3 weeks
But get handreared/ and or caged birds ans all sensiblity of natural instinct goes out the door... including not knowing how to look after chicks once hatched... has a ring of familiarity to it similar to 'feral' human behavior. _________________ My Spelling is Not Incorrect...It's 'Creative'
