I recently got a bigger, more suitable cage for my four kaks. Unfortunately one of my boys has broken his leg and is now secluded in a smaller cage while his leg heals (looking rather sorry with a cast on his leg). Since I have three males and one female I'm a bit concerned that there will be territory issues if I put the three healthy ones in the bigger cage and the patient later when he has been declared fit by my vet. The flock has kept vigil around the patient, so he hasn't been left alone in a corner but I still worry.

Should I take the risk and move the three healty ones or would it be better to wait until the patient gets an all clear?

The patient is getting his cast removed on Monday so I think I'll give it a go after that. I can put the seclusion cage inside the bigger cage so he will in a way be moving in with the others while still being restricted to the small cage.

On an offnote: I'm still amazed that my vet opted to set the break and put a cast on the leg. Teo has a steel rod and a cast on his leg. Amazing that it can be done on such a small animal! The challenge has been to keep him fairly still - not an easy thing to accomplish![/img]

saw your picture on FB....,

cant't understand the procedure of your vet.

It's impossible to care for a broken leg in three days.

If possible your pet's leg should be fixed for two weeks, than your bird should be a new old one <v>

Teo has had the cast on for a week now and I have a scheduled appointment with the vet on Monday. Teo has a steel rod in his leg and the cast is supporting it. I'll know better tomorrow how the leg has healed.

I'm glad to hear that, as I was a bit worried that Teo would not heal properly. The vet had told me to keep him still and we all know what a challenge it is to keep a kakariki still Wink

We went to have the cast removed today. He's has the cast for two weeks (I get my dates easily mixed up so I thought it had only been a week) and the vet said that the leg looked good. Now I've got to excercise the leg to help Teo to start using it.

It has been fascinating to watch the flocks reactions to Teo's accident and the recovery process. Iwa (Teo's brother) went straight to him after the accident and cuddled up to him. Usually they leave a gap of 2-5 cm between them, but this time Iwa sat so close that their sides touched. Now Teo is still in a smaller cage right beside the big cage and he is never left alone while the flock flies, there is always someone sitting on a perch beside the small cage. As the small cage stands on a table its perch is lower than the other bird's perches. I had to put an extra perch inside the big cage right beside Teo's cage because Iwa has chosen to sleep lower down and beside his brother. Usually the birds roost on the highest perch they can find so I'm quite amazed at the amount of care and concern Iwa shows for his brother.

Live and learn they say. Laughing

It only took few days that Thoomy used his leg as the years before the accident. It was a very difficult injury, the vet gave Thommy no chance for a normal life after. But Thommy is a great and lucky kak <v>

What did you do to encourage Thommy to use his leg? I've been massaging Teo's leg and moving it, but he does not use it at all. I can feel that he has some muscle power as he pushes back with the leg when I push it.

I'm still keeping Tieo in the sick cage with only one branch as the vet recommended it. Somehow I think that it might be a reason for Teo not to use his leg - he doesn't have to. I don't think he's ready tobe put in with the others yet, but i wonder if he needs a challenge in the sick cage to start using the leg. Do you have any advice?

I think that you are correct... if its good enough for a bit of physio then surely its good enough for exercise....

The probleme was what to do that he didn't used his leg, as he should not .

The best protection was not able to prevent him fom trying to use his leg. As soon as it was free, he used it as normal.
