hello,
can someone tell me wether i can feed mango to my kakariki's or not . i've put some in the cage and the birds seem to like it.
when searching on the internet, some say it's toxic, others use it too sometimes. So i do not know what to do.. Remove the mango from the cage and never give it again or ????

please help because i don't know

We have feed mango without a 2nd thuoght...
Well anything in the fuit bowls, on the garden trees is always fair game to through in the holding flight...
If u run search, Quick search block on the left. we have also observed when poisonous plants are put in....I have put them in a cnr, not in the middle...so they have to fly there.
Even so, after a few days they had not stripped it... do that with most other branches, a few natives or gum they strip it.....very quick

I have a theory, that with a varied diet stuff that does effect some birds, doesnt other wise...
Again back in the forums, we had a king that made sort work of a rat poison block in the safety cage, and did not release for some time.....we , the vet everyone was waiting for this bird to die. There was no way I was going to let that bird suffer thru, and was ready to step in quickly.
Didnt even miss an eye blink...we where dosing Vit K in a bit of butter.
The house parrot got into the rich chocolate self saucing .....and the avocado left out...
If they get everything, it seems the so called bad stuff doesnt effect, and if real bad they just leave alone.

i contacted the man , from who i bought my kakarikis to tell me about mango. so he said there is a lot of confusion about it. The big pit/seed in the middle actually is extremely toxic for birds. but the yellow-orange pulp of this fruit is nutritional. It contains vitamin A and other important stuff. He also advised to me to remove the peel because mangos are treated with chemicals in order to keep them longer fresh ..

I have never heard of mango seed/ pip being toxic, nor ever worried about it.
Sounds like another old wives tale to me..
like apple seeds,.. in sayi8ng that, a few apple seeds will do more good than harm... arsenic is a trace element required in small does for good health, which apple/ pear seeds have... on the other hand to feed a handful of these seeds in one go could have a detrimental effect...
Never heard of birds dieing because the frequent apple orchards.
Same goes for the avocado seed....ever watched a kakariki or king parrot try to get into one... they spend days doing so, and still cant.[/b]
