Hello,
My name is Stephanie and I am considering 'buying' two male Kakarikis from a local pet store and I would like to ask a number of questions concerning their nature as pets. I have read numerous conflicting accounts of how Kakarikis birds interact with their 'owners'.

1. Are Kakarikis affectionate?

2. Is it true that they can become aggressive and territorial - thereby not allowing their 'owners' to interact with them?

3. Is it true that will select one member of a household to become 'friends' with? I'll admit that this claim scars me as a potential 'owner'

4. Do Kakarikis birds make good pets?

Thanks so much!

in their own way, if u want a cuddlt cat get a Persian or similar , not a blue Russian breed, kakariki are very independent which makes them a great pet because if left alone, go on holiday u dont come back to a bird that has plucked its self because of an emotional dependance

All pets can have this issue.. well its not the pets really it is the owner, with any pet , a cat dog, bird of all types even horses, the owner maintains the edge of being alpha male... they head the pack not the pet run the household.
And territorial, yes , like most animals get more territorial when they are getting ready to nest, have pups etc... how much depends on the owner, who is alpha male and the trust that pet has with the owner... thrust and alpha male go hand in hand.

Once again this is a natural thing with pets, be it a cat dog or bird... a female pet tends towards a male member of the family and visa versa....from there it is a matter of where that member of the family chooses top stand in the pecking order of the family... above or below the cat, dog, pet.

depends on what one wants from a pet....one that is independent , can look after its self , but interact with, or a pet to curl upto as boring as and like a hot water bottle.. the latter is not a blue Russian cat or a kakariki.
Also keep in mind most pet birds sit on a perch all day and do next to nothing, a kakariki is always doing something interesting .. want a boring bird pet, save a lot of trouble and cut a picture of a budgie out and tape to a perch.

parrots I recommend as house parrots , kakariki, King and crimson wing.. easy tamed , not chewers like sulphur crested... good interaction

Be prepared for a lot of mess and chewing (especially flowers). Mine is territorial and not particularly affectionate unless food is involved but is so comical, nosy and active. Yours would have each other for company but mine has adopted us and talks our language now. He loves heat, flying, food and making a mess.
