My lovely little pied Kakariki hen is having some issues with her nails. They're getting far too long, and she doesn't chew them off herself (I read on another post that they should do this).

Her cage set-up is adapted to her ground foraging behavior. She has a sandstone rock, hay and dried grass, and some thick coarse pieces of bark. I hide food around here. All of her perches are branches which she can grip around so that her nails don't meet. She does have a concrete perch but I worried it would irritate her feet so I took it away. She used to have those sheets of grit-paper but my local stores don't sell them any more.

I have tried trimming, but I can't take much off. The experience is also extremely stressful for birdie and myself so I prefer to take her to the vet.

What else can I do? I am worried she is going to snap them or get them caught in something. Sad

Help!

After having over 1000 parrots, mainly kakariki, we have never had to trim nails..
Except a sulphur crested house parrot I had 30yrs ago, and used a fine engineering/ points file to keep them rounded so not to scratch/tear my arms.
Kakariki do have muck longer than 'normal ' claws than most other parrot species.
Can u load some pics up...instructions if u cant figure it out are in the how to section of the forums.
