Hi All
I'm currently studying Animal Management and one of my subjects is how to care for a Kakariki. I have found all your knowledge and discussions on this forum invaluable but I have one question that I have been unable to get answered....
How often would you feed your Kakariki (times of day, frequency, how much)?
Much depends on if one is breeding or a house pet, house parrot, ones time, using supplements or a natural fresh diet and full on breeding.
We Feed chopped veggies 2x a day.
Fresh fruit at least every 2 to 3 days...usually 1 to 2
Cooked meat most days at the same time as the veggies.
plus the chopped potato, kumura, pumpkin skins, cali, broccoli stems , everything from our own meat preparations , plus most the leftovers.
Seed is in large deep seed trays, enough to supply at least 2 weeks
Fresh water every day around dawn.
And apple cider vinegar in the chopped veggies every 4 to 5 days.
This has been a very successful regime with proven results over nearly 10yrs.

All our parrots, kakariki, turqs , burkes, Crimson wings, king parrots, button quail, Californian quail etc the same diet. _________________ My Spelling is Not Incorrect...It's 'Creative'
I have a large mixed aviary, kaks, budgies and cockatiels. My problem is - some days all the fresh food gets devoured, other days most is wasted. I do tend to replenish the seed daily, as I see the fresh wasted, and think they must be hungry...
To minimalise wastage, should i just feed fresh fruit/vege in the am, with minimal seed for the day, then more fresh if theyve eaten first lot?
My hubby is in the process of building new breeding cages, and at this stage 2 separate large aviaries - one for the kaks and the other for the others. Mainly because I want to breed the kaks not the budgies/tiels, and the budgies/tiels are less inclined to try new/better foods (they all eat celery/grass seeds/peas and corn, native fauna).
Are Kaks having to much seed do you think? which is why they arent having the veges/fruit which they normally go nuts over?

We have next to nil wastage,
Veggies are chopped so they have mouth fulls , not a hunk they rip apart drop till it is big enough to chew...
And watch what they are eating...it changes as to seasons, if nesting , moulting etc.. alter your chopped veggie mix slightly.
Seed... all the seed trays take a good 5L of mixed seed for 2 weeks.
They eat the sunflower and good stuff 1st, then leaves them the rest...
At the end of the2/3 weeks the seed trays are shaken, the husk floats to the top and skimmed off. What is skimed off still has a lot of seed in, this gets put in a deep basin in the holding flight and they spend hours digging thru over the next couple weeks finishing off.
They also have a normal seed tray.
Of the seed left over in the seed trays after shaking, they get topped up , or if access has built up, usually millet/ rape, I feed to quail and grass parrots. After a 2 week period this amounts to approx 3 to 4" in the bottom of a bread bag
Waste means cost, waste means more work cleaning up. _________________ My Spelling is Not Incorrect...It's 'Creative'
