Hi all,
Im new to this site!!
Im looking at some information regarding these gorgeous birds!!!
Yesterday our gorgeous Budgie had to be put to sleep, he was only 2 years old and we were devastated
but we are very eager to get another bird.
our local pet supplier has got some Kakarikis in, he says they are about 16/20 weeks old are selling at £45 each.
what are these birds like as pets?? are they good companions? do they talk? are they easy to tame? what do they eat?? what size cage do they need?
please respond asap, were going to have a look tomorrow!!!
Keep in mind many of us are on the other side of the world tucked up in bed.
Kakariki would be one of the toughest caged birds around, just likevother breeds/ species, come from good breeding stock.
They are very active and have a independant nature which doesnt predispose them for pschological dependance issue like feather plucking.
Like all birds parrots other than grss parrots (budgies, burkes) they have far more veggie and other foods than seed... basically eat all the scrapes from your dinner preparation and most of left overs.
On the left is a "quick Search" block wher u can put in words like diet for furtherr information.
yes they canm be tought to talk.. quick searh
They do need a larger cage than a budgie and good fly time.
Very easy to tame down, even from wild. _________________ My Spelling is Not Incorrect...It's 'Creative'
Kakariki is a curious and highly active bird who likes to inspect everything and to be a part of what you are doing. It will do what it likes, when it likes regardless of what you think. Being curious helps when taming, and they tame easily. I have read on this forum that some have birds that talk, mine don't, they make up sounds based on what they hear around them.
Their diet consist of seeds, fruits and vegetables, mostly veggies. Use the search button to find more about their diet.
Being active birds means that they need a large cage. Here in Finland the minimum cage size for one bird is 0.57 m2 per bird.
If you want a bird that will put his beak in everything you do and has an opinion on everything you say, but is not clingy then kakariki is a good choice. I would suggest that you get at least two, they will then have each others company as well as your plus they actually tame more easily if they are not alone.
I've got two birds, brothers, and I have endless fun watching their antics. They have an endless supply of energy and are always up to no good but I love them dearly!
We g. ot our "kiki" as a young bird and he has learnt to talk. We didn't know the sex but now assume he is a boy. He is full of character and attitude and is very acrobatic and rather messy. He isn't too good with children/nervous people as he is rather domineering and needs firm training. The cat is also a bit "put out" He has become one of the family but stays firmly in the cage when we are eating or have visitors.
He can say; Who's a pretty boy then, Good morning, Let me out and Hello Kiki and usually starts to compete with the TV,computor or telephone
