PostPosted: Fri Jun 08, 2012 5:25 am    Post subject: rough eggs

i have a question for a friend of mine.

He told me that his kakariki-hen layed an egg with a rough eggshell.

The former eggs looked normal.

Is this a sighn that something is wrong? (low Ca or so)

thanks

georg

The eggshell is a protective layer for the embryo. 95% of the shell consists of calcium carbonate that builds up on the inner membrane.

I don't think its low CA causing this.
Deficiencies involving vitamins E, B12, and D as well as calcium, phosphorus, selenium do impact the formation of the egg shell; but most commonly resulting in THIN or SOFT shells or eggs without a shell (only the inner and outer membranes and the yolk).

EXCESSIVE consumption of phosphorus or calcium is more likely to result in eggs with an abnormally thick shell or rough shells.

Has the hen been treated with an antbiotic recently?
Sometimes excessive use of antibiotics can have the same result.

FIRST offtopic: i only can answer this threat when quoteing, otherwise i see this screen:You don't have permission to access /ftopic-reply-2573.html on this server.

No Gee, i did not hear about antibiotics given to the hen, but i will ask. Its a threat in my forum.
And i can't imagine that ther is too much Ca or phosphorus in the diet of the birds but i willl ask in this direction

thanks Gee

Is this when you hit the "reply" button at the bottom of the thread (last post) but the "quote" button on a post works?

I cant reproduce this, have checked data bases for errors, compacted server data base etc.....found no errors...
Is it still doing it, anyone else having the issue?
Steps.
