Hi everybody,
do you know something about Dahlia as a part of the diet for kakariki.

I coudn't find any facts for birds neither if its poisoning or if its good for them.
We can eat the flowers as salat. Dogs and cats may eat the flowers too - but birds?

thanks

Georg

Hi Georg,

Dahlia is a genus of bushy, tuberous, herbaceous perennial plants native to Mexico, Central America, and Colombia. A member of the Asteraceae or Compositae, dicotyledonous plants, related species include the sunflower, daisy, chrysanthemum and zinnia.

NOT TO BE CONFUSED with Dalea

Aztecs used Dahlia as food and as medicine against urinary infections.

Root (tuber), leaf and flower are edible.

However, I haven't been able to find info on just how strong de medical power of Dahlia root is. I would only feed my birds the flower and leaves, in small amounts, just to be safe.
