Hi

Im Salina, I have recently bought my first Kakariki about 6 days now i have had her/him.

However yesterday my partner and I noticed she was missing her back nail/claw on her left foot (when facing the bird's face)

its not red of bleeding but i am still worried about her/him. have any of you experienced this? should i get it looked at?

Secondly its claws are quite long, but how long should they be in mm.

kind regards

Sometimes claws can get nipped off in the nest, we have a 'runt' from a batch of chicks in a cage as a pet. She got a bit of a hard time at some stage, missing several claws and flight feathers on 1 wing (roots nipped as a chick) She gets around fine as a cage bird.

I don't quite understand what u mean by that, is it inflamed?
The other times claws can get nipped off is when the chicks are fresh out of the nest, still getting their bearings, and hang on the wire of the next flight. If there is a male with a mate in the next flight he can get a little aggressive.
Length of nails. there is a further info in other threads. To the left of this page is a block called 'Quick Search' type nails in the forum search part and it will find the threads. There is also a search button above.
Kikes in the wild spend much of their time on the Forrest floor scratching in the mulch. Bird that do this, Kiwi, Kakapo, tend to have longer claws than other species.

Opps i actually meant: Its not red Or bleeding. well if they tend to loose nails when getting used to the cage and the flying area (living room) then i think Kiki should be ok.

thank you for your response

kind regards
