There is a rumour that a blue mutation has been bred in Belgium. Does anyone have any information?
Hi Allen.
I live in Belgium and I have also heard of the rumour. The blue kakariki would be in Germany grown but I think that it remains but at a rumour.
I don't think a blue would be possible. Its never occured naturally in NZ (whereas the others have). Green and yellow are closely related colours and so the genetic break-down that causes pied/lutiuno makes sense.
I would also add (forgot before), there was a unique species of kakariki on the Society Islands (Pacific Ocean). It was brown all over with a black-crown.
was, extinct now. bummer. hate those rats, and cats, and stoats, and mongoose (and a bad shout out to all other invasive species!)
Thanks for the comments. Seeing is believing. I think a blue mutation would be great for the popularity of Kakarikis amongst breeders. My wife keeps telling me one of our normal male greens has more blue under the wings but I don't see it. It does not stay still long enough. I supose I should catch it and check.
I think that blue is possible.
The basic (green) is in fact the sum of yellow and blue. Yellow arises by green minus blue. In the same way blauw can arise from green minus yellow.
Look at the colours that the Budgerigars have now. They have also started with the green as a basic. I even think that Kakariki's have more possibilities in itself. They have also the colour red what can result in purple and orange colours.
