Hi have a few month old hand reared Kakariki he is class so full of life, at times he sits fluffs up a bit and starts lamenting or crying if I go near him he gets louder is this normal he snaps out of it at the minute he is parading through a chest of drawers on a mission.!!!

My Kakariki does something similar although her stance is different. She lowers her head right down and out forward, and makes a " eh eh eh" kind of noise, continuously. If I talk to her louder, she makes the noise louder and stays in the pose. While she is like this, I can pet her on the head, chest, tail, back, anywhere and she just doesn't move or stop her
chanting noise. I believe it is a sign of "Not Happy" about something, but I am not sure either. She does snap out of it of course, and now I generally let her go and leave her to it, as I think she needs to assert herself for whatever reason. I don't think it is crying though, it sounds more like a grumpy state to me. I also notice she does it if she is trying to rest and I am disturbing her. So I again, quietly leave her to rest up.

Hope that's helped a bit, only observing your bird over time will help you to understand your own bird, as they are all unique little creatures.

My Kakariki scurries back and forth in front of the hall mirror making a sound like "ooo", "ooo". It's a softer sound than his usual chattering shriek, or his monkey-like "ooo, ooo, eee, eee" sound. He is getting bolder, and walks up to me on the floor sometimes, and when he does this, he makes the soft clucking sound, like you say, kind of a crying sound.

I think the soft clucking sound is the sound he makes when approaching another bird, as in, "I'm being friendly, so don't hurt me". The chattering shriek I interpret as "I'm coming out of my cage now, everybody look at me!" And the monkey-like sound seems like he is saying "are there any other birds around here?" It's the first sound he makes in the morning.

The sounds you are describing seem like sort of a nesting/greeting sound, although for all I know he's telling you to go away. Mine also has a quiet cackling sound he makes when he is into mischief, like riffling through my wife's jewelry drawer or gnawing on books on the shelf. I find my Kakariki's behaviour a little baffling to be honest. He is a strange bird.

Yeah the eh eh eh sound is the same you just described it better, yeah I just leave him to it he is hilarious he came up to me and was all quiet and attentive I started saying hello over and over again he seemed like he was trying to copy me I kept repeating myself and he kept coming closer. At this stage he was an inch away from my face he then stook his head in my mouth and tried to scrape the back of my teeth. I nearly fell on the floor laughing and he kept trying to get his head back in. Is that normal or did I get a lunatic of a bird altogether??????

You are a lady?
he is male?
Good combo to start with.
kakariki, whodont have a natural fear, but rather a natural caution

I believe parrots have an instinct for ppl...it normally takes a few weeks trust building to get as far as you have.

Fortunatrly u area lady, and not an older male...when they pull on your moustach or worse still... nose hairs ...... lmao

Happy New Year
Steps

Oh sorry mate confusion there I only got him Christmas Eve and I am male, my girlfriend was laughing her head off when I told her because there is a lot of joking going on at home about the new "Bird" in the house, he is only here a week today and he has settled in really quickly, he does nip though anytime he is around my shoulders he would nip at my ear or bite my neck I was reading on what to do in the forum and one guy reckons pinch him back on the wing, another person suggested talking in a strong lower tone, and another said grab his beak I think, what would you do yourself????

Start with turning your head and as he dose it a sudden deep growl
"Dont Bite" Or "not yhe ear"

Sounds that associtewith the action ...
Ay 1st he may fly away..thats ok
will be a little statled.

The growl is the 1st reaction between kakariki/parrots in a flock

If he is persistant, its then putting your hand/finger up and a little flick, again natural reaction in a flock.

The nip is more a "hey new toy...is it edable"

The more siever actions are when parrots actually bite.

Leave your mouth open and see if he tries to climb in. I took the strings off my guitar and then left the room for a minute, then came back and found the bird climbing into the guitar. He's always trying to climb into things. Maybe your bird thinks you're a tree with a nice big hole in it!!

I think there is more truth in that than what you think...
I belive it does take time for parrots to reach the concept that a foot or leg belongs to the same part as an ear or hand...
Didnt explain that well

A tree has branchs trunk yes they understand it is the same plant type

But the concept something so large. compared to their size feels from one end to the the other...takes time.

If they nip a finger, and u are sitting down, u growl, they understand quick
But nip a toe, growl, they sort of look up, tilt their head, and one can sort of see them thinking
"hmmm Im way down here, the growl is way up there, dont get that, thats strange??"

that's funny you said that because I was saying to Sarah I'd say he would get great crack out of a hamster cage because he is always burrowing around through everything in my room, he even likes burrowing in along my arm if it is close to my side any gaps at all and he is off.
Your point about our scale is very relevant he tries to get up the leg of my trousers and sometimes nips when I make a noise he does look up as if to say what's that got to do with you?

You're right, I've often wondered if the bird thinks my hand is a different animal than I am. He shows no fear when I walk up to him and put my nose up to his beak but is nervous of my hands and pays no attention whatsoever when he is on the floor and I stand beside him but, if I bend over and talk to him he looks at me as if he's saying, Where did you come from?

Maybe that's why she burrows into everything- looking for a nest. Mine does not burrow-he sits on top of things and shrieks. Although he does like to look inside boxes and things.
