My oldest hen seems to be sick - she's breathing heavlily, sleeps a lot and keeps to herself. No good signs.
But she's still eating, not much, but she's eating so that's always something.
I want to take her to the vet now but I just discovered a problem - it's 28 celsius outside. Made me think of this post; http://kakariki.net/ftopict-385.html 5) DON'T ever sell or pick up birds if the ambient temperature is above 30 degrees Celsius. This places far too much stress on the birds.
She's now in a smaller sickcage, it was no problem what so ever to catch her - not that it usually is.
If I want to get her to the vet, I have to go by bus for about an hour.
She's in a bad condition, but the temperature is way off here. What's the wisest thing to do? Try to get a time in the morning when it's cooler or hope for the best and go to the vet?
After a light shower she's got a little more active and ate a larger amount of sprouted seeds.
Still breathing heavy and is now sleeping.
I got a time at the vet tomorrow in the morning, hopefully it won't be as hot then.
In a closer inspection of her tailfeathers, I noticed that they were sprinkled with poo - might she have a constipation?
I'm gonna give her a lot of fiber rich food now, especially soaked wheat bran. Appearently, it should be effective against constipation.
ALL advice is more than ! I'll try to get a photo of her tail feathers.
Oh and of course, the temp has risen to a "lovely" 30 degrees...
Worms....
Run a forum search (quick seack block to the left) use microscope
to establish worm type and there is a long post on what to dose with
I the mean time dose with invermectin on the back of the nect...doses for mites and several types of worms

From memoery, this post is from and Aussie, where distances of a 1000 miles means nothing to them...and relates to shipping
A sick bird is usuallu kept warm, about 28/30 C in a cage with a lot of ventilation, rather in shipping boxes...eg 12 birds in closed box 500mx 300mm x 300mm for 8 or 10 hrs...you have sort of take the post out of context...

Thanks for the reply, I'll check for worms. She's a little better now, but I'll still take her to the vet in the morning, just in case.

I'm very sorry to hear that
When you put it that way, I'm truly lucky. How have you and your birds fared?
