I'm new here and I have a question. My parents got me a 12 week old male Kakariki and I was just wondering how long it takes to train them. I have no clue even how to start off training him. Is there a way for me to get him to get used to my hand being in the cage or holding him? I've taken him out a few times and held him, I also have gloves on cuz I'm not really antsy about getting bitten and I know he bites because he bites the gloves every time I hold him. Thanks in advance for any help.
Oh and one more thing, how do you go about finding the right name for your bird? I still have to pick one out for mine.
I don't keep them as pets myself, but I suggest you take a look at older posts in the "kakariki pet" section of the forum. There's a lot of useful info there. It's like if there were a lot of different articles.
The only direct advice that I can give you is to stop holding your kakariki. They don't like to be held. Just let him off walk off the cage and eventually he will perch on you, specially if he is handfed.
Kakariki in general don't like to be cuddled or touched. Even breeding birds don't preen each other like happens with other species, and they usually keep a distance between each other, althought they interact.
And if he bites... hold your hand still, don't step back or you'll reinforce this behavior.
Training... it's quite a general and wide subject. You'll find good information on how to start and how to correct some problems in older posts.
Keep posting if you have any doubts.
