My one year old kakariki Batfink is ill and I have no idea whats wrong with him. He fell ill yesterday. In the morning he was his usual self, flying, cheeping and getting up to mischief. I gave him his bath dish and the room was warm because the heating had been on all morning. He had an energetic bath, got soaking wet then skipped under the bed into the shade like he always does after a bath.

I was folding clothes for an hour before I realised he was missing still.

I looked under the bed and he was balancing on one foot and rocking with his eyes closing. It looked like he was sleeping. I put my hand towards him which usually makes him run away as hes not hand-tame, but this time he just let me pick him up.

He was very limp and looked off balance, his wings were hanging by his side instead of on his back like usual. He looked like he had no energy at all. That was about 23hours ago and these symptoms have remained. He slept all night and is still sleeping now and very limp. He has managed the odd drink of water and a few seeds.

His vet is closed as its easter weekend here and the out-of-hours vet told me they are not specialised in parrots and the stress might be too much for him.

Please if anyone is reading this help me, I can't bear to lose him.

Thanks,

Steph

Hi Steph,

How is he now? Mine went downhill quickly like this last year. I discovered he'd been eating a pot plant which was poisonous to him. The vet didn't have a clue what was wrong with him so I put it down to this. Thankfully he pulled through. I hope he's OK.

Im sorry I missed this post over Easter..
My gess would be as described above.
Unfortunately most house plants are toxic to varing degrees
Also telflon non stick cooking ware...bad news for pets, and people
And cleaning/disinfecting materials and the containers they are in.

Sponges, containers should never be left out. pump Spray and aersol types should never be used....thu the atomised particule are toxic to the birds and us...
Marketing by chemical companies, in particular over the last 40 yrs have turned our homes into toxic enviroments...
We poison ourselves, our children and our pets...and cost a lot
I have a lab backfround in this feild

Try this..couple spoon fulls of dishwash power in the hand basn, sink, toilet with hot water..let totlet stand till next use then brush before.
Use a sponge to wipe walls, cupbards etc just wet down... cover as much so as not to let dry.. then wipe down/dry with clean teatowel
Less work, better results
Floors, scoop washing machine powder in 1/2 bucket hot water..wet down as above...go over again mopping most of the water up
Dry off with towel from bathrooms by hand

Less work, faster, cheaper, cleaner, no toxic crap in the air and minnial left of surfaces
When u wash the tea towels and towells they come up real clean too.
