Hi everyone,
I'm after some advice - again! (The eucalyptus branch went down very well by the way).
By the time we go on holiday this summer we would have had our little monster for a year. I hate the thought of leaving him behind with someone calling in to see him and was hoping someone can let me know what sort of travellers they are. We will be travelling in the UK by car for about 5-6 hours, staying a week and then driving back. Would this be OK or would the stress be worse than if we left him at home? If it is OK for them is it best to leave him in his cage rather than put him in a box?
We can put 12 kakariki in a plywood box, sides screwed together, a couple rows of 1/2" holes, with 2 compartments each approx 250x 200x 200mm
put them on an aeroplane trip, then they have a long drive with a total of about 10 to 12hrs.
Inside they have capscum flesh,(miostrure/water source) 1/2 applle and a bit of seed scattered....
And all arrive in very good health....
I would strongly suggest to take pet birds with you rather than have ppl look after them.....Things more often than not go wrong...
If a bit worried, take them on a few short trips, even to visit friends, or school trips, or take to work and sit in the cnr of the office...
We know several ppl who regularly do this...office workers, teachers, retail shops. _________________ My Spelling is Not Incorrect...It's 'Creative'
Thanks for the advice. Will this mean he's also OK to travel in a cage in the car and if so should I put a cover over the cage?
He's quite timid and although he recognises us as family he's not comfortable with hands so we can't handle him at all. Therefore I was just hoping to put his cage in the car so we wouldn't have to stress him out.
Put a towel over the cage when taking out to the car, and leave on till a little while after he has settled down...then slowly pull the towel off... and let him look around...
Yes, use his cage, thats his home, safety place...
It will not take long before he is used to being moved around in the cage, knowing nothing bad is going to happen...he just needs to get convidence. _________________ My Spelling is Not Incorrect...It's 'Creative'
My partner takes our Macaw and Galah to work every day. Only about a 15min drive. The Galah sits on the top of the front set and the macaw in a cage on the back set. They both really like it, the galah starts sing and the macaw looks all around and stares out the other drivers at the ligths.
Should add....
Dont leave him in the car on a hot day with the windows up, or sitting in the sun... _________________ My Spelling is Not Incorrect...It's 'Creative'
Thanks again, I just didn't wanna freak him out and give him a heart attack or something. We left him for 2 days last weekend and he still isn't speaking to us, is very quiet and not interested in us at all this week.
Rest assured, the car has got air-con and when we stop for breaks along the way one of us will be with him at all times.
Now I've just got to get the caravan owner to agree that we can take him. I shall of course inform them that he's as good as gold, doesn't chew anything, strip paint or wallpaper and never goes to the toilet on the furniture - ho-hum!
