hello to everyone and thankyou for all the great advice i have found on this site. I am already the owner of 2 cockateils, a male and female about i year old now. In 2-3 weeks time i will be picking up my new kakarikis, yeah! I have on order, being made a 10x6ft aviary, with a 4x4ft internal perch/flight area as well. I am completely new to kakarikis, only discovering them a couple of weeks ago in a pet shop. I saw three beautiful green birds in a cage and watched them for about an hour! (my husband was also with me) They were captivating, darting about the cage making a cute 'clucking' noise. We came home and read as much as we could find on this facinating little bird and also found this site and spent many hours reading the threads on here. We were smitten, ordered the aviary and went back to the pet shop. Now they had four in the cage. Well our plan was to put our 2 cockateils into the aviary (at the moment they are in a 2.5ft indoor cage) along with the three male kakarikis we had seen. We discovered the fourth kak was a female but we didn't have the heart to leave her left in the cage on her own. We also figured it would give people the idea that it was ok to have 1 kak on its own in a cage and we've read enough to know thats not good! We also figured that the aviary was already going to have a female in it anyway (our cockateil). We have no intention of putting a nest box in there or breeding, we just want them as wonderful pets and some more company for our cockateils. Well one assistant said this set up would be absolutely fine as they have plenty of space & no nest box. Another assistant said it should be fine but she would advice us getting another 2 females because even though they probably would'nt breed without nest boxes, they would still pair up. Without an even number for the males, they might fight. She said wait and see, you can add 2 females if you need to later but i think if it's almost definate that they want a partner each, then its better to find another 2 now so that i can place all the birds into the new aviary together. (the 4 kaks are still in the pet shop, reserved for us to collect when the aviary is ready). I have read relevant threads on here but the pro and cons of mixed flights seems to involve breeding pairs with nest boxes. So it would be good to get some opinions on our predicament. Do we stick with what we have, 4 boys & 2 girls or do we get another 2 girls. I should say our cockateil pair are gentle, tame and friendly with each other but also do not breed. Many thanks to steptoe for your threads on mixed flight and colonies, very encouraging. thanks in advance

We have a mixed flight at the monent...4m x 1.2 m
Br4eeding pair of turqs, a couple kakariki and a young king, a 4 button quail.
So long as the hole for the turgs nest box is just too small for the kakariki t get in , and the box just to big for them to reach right in, the turqs are fine.

I gather you still have to build th avairy? "10x6ft aviary, with a 4x4ft internal perch/flight"
I would strongly suggest or a 'entertainment/ avairy to have it side on, rather than look down into it. Lter if wish or need be, make a divider frame that fits inside , and hinged....the hinge acts as an internal door and the frame divider can be folded up ..and held in place with a couple 2" x 1" tags screwed in place
Espec with kakariki a safety door/roon is a must.

thanks for reply. Yes the aviary is being made for us. It will be side on and yes it does have a double safety door. Something else i have thought of that i am not sure of is heating in the winter. We live in the uk and from what i've read the kaks will be fine without extra heating, but what about the cockateils, they have been inside for a year. They obviously will have the indoor shed area which will be shut at night. Will they need heating? Advice on this would also be great. thanks

Yes kakariki will be fine, the live in snow areas....
But it is still best to condition from warm indoors to cold winter outdoors...which means introduce to the avairy in summer.
ppl who have heat senitive birds in cold areas often use lamps on timerfor heating in smallish 'sleep areas'
cockateils...I dont know...but going on many breeders in NZ in cold areas they are ok to....thu 1 guy does have heating but to extend the breeding season.
