Hi all,
Well I have spent hours reading posts on this site and think it is great such a helpful community exists.
In my teens, I bred budgies as a hobby and now later (much later!) in life, with young kids, we have an aviary in the garden which is mixed but also includes 5 Kakarikis which are obviously the stars!
Two have definitely paired off so we are constructing a flight for them and will move them in there soon.
I have read all about diet being key and also leaving them to it.
So, my question is on these points.
As diet will include fresh food and water, and protein, I presume it will be necessary to visit the flight each day to change and replenish. What I am thinking of doing is using swing feeders so I don't need to go into the flight. How does this sound - I have seen some posts about visiting only once every two days but would think fresh stuff would start to go off.
Secondly, the position of the nest boxes has me thinking.
Of course, when the hen is off the nest it is nice to have a check but if I put the nest boxes in the flight, that will mean me entering it. So, am I better attaching them to the outside of the flight so that I can check now and again when the hen is off the nest without having to enter the flight?
Feeders.. I made up a draw type .. feeder, that mounts into a hole made in the wire.
There is a old thread on it with pics.
We feed chopped veggies/ protein in the feeder.. fruit, cut open and pushed thru the wire.. on the inside a wide branch they can sit on and feed.
Vegies every day.. protein as you have leftovers from your dinner, and fruit, every few days, as one does the shopping or in our case what ever happens to be on the trees in the garden ... and apple cores stuff like that.
Nesting boxes.. no dont go checking all the time.. just leave them, the hen to it.. less interference the better the results and off spring..
So screw to a wall, preferably facing towards the equator/ rising sun.
And not in direct line of sight of neighbouring flights.
A large bit of ply wood stapled to the dividing wire/ partition.
And 2 nesting boxes.. separate by around 1m at least. _________________ My Spelling is Not Incorrect...It's 'Creative'
