Hi all, quite new to kakariki' s but not birds or even aviarys
Got 2 aviarys set up for 2 pairs of kaks, 9ftx6ftx6f each..1 pair is on young and the other are on eggs.
I'm not allowing them to go down after these batches and I'll be removing the boxes, once winter really kicks in where would the birds roost? With no boxes in there what can I use? I don't want them with nothing at all, so much so 1 of the cocks is a hand tame talking pet.
What do others do during the UK winter?
Chris...

Use out the Quick search block on the left...
Kakariki are extremely hardy ..they winter snow, peck at the ice covering pond.. and if manage to get in.. they swim.. and survive temps up around the mid 40s C
They will breed all yr round so long as out of the wind.. with frosts on the ground.
Its the wind chill factor.. Consider a heavy sun/ wind shade cloth stapled to the outside of the frame.. or cable tied on .. and or a beer crate type wooden box nailed up in a cnr, facing into the cnr with a couple branches.. 1 or 2" in diameter bit branch laid/ screwed in the bottom.
Even a large card board box.. they will eventually destroy it... they will not be bored with it
As to stopping them breeding by removing nest boxes...unlikely.
Good diet, shelter from wind.. leave them to it and the nesting boxes
