Hi I’m new to this and I am buying a kakariki at 3 months old I just wanted to ask some questions:
1-Are they easy to tame?
2-How often should I take it outside?
3- Do they bite? If so does it hurt/cause damage?
4-What is the average life span?
5-Is it ok around dogs?
Thanks for reading!! Please reply
Most of you list is covered in previous threads over the decade or so
Use of the "Quick Search" block on the left will give far more detailed answers.
I also suggest diet cage size
Tame , any intelligent animal/ bird is very easy to tame keeping in with common sense and think everything you do all the way thru... the latter of not doing so is way animals , birds bite because they unwittingly get 'trained' to do so.
Ave life span.. in captivity.. that ver much depends on care diet, environment.
A good diet, kept fit, records show 20yrs at the top end, general good conditions 14/ 18 yrs being very common.
Around dogs, cats.. that depends if your dog/ cat is well trained, knows hat it can touch and how it can play , interact with certain things.
We had a Russian blue cat.. basically a breed designed to hunt kill.. but co habited in the home with a permanent free fly flying house parrot for many yrs.. including extensive unsupervised periods of us on holidays..
Dogs are far easier to train to co habit inter act.
Birds initially nibble at something to find out if friendly , eatable...rem they do crack nuts, so a investigative nibble most will consider a bite.. a real bite WILL break the skin and cause bleeding.. a bigger parrot can easy dislocate a finger...rip a hole in a hand.
Its a matter of perspective.
on an intial nibble, fine, when gets to unacceptable level, let them know.. pulling away can turn into a game for them...
think EVERYTHING thru
And like staff, children, dogs, cats.. its just depends who is the actual alpha 'male' that rules the roost. _________________ My Spelling is Not Incorrect...It's 'Creative'
