Hi all! I just brought home my first kakariki. She's young -- they told me that she's probably just about to start her first moult. When I first introduced her to her new cage I noticed that the feathers around one eye look damp and messy, and that eye looks weepy. This is the first time I've noticed this -- I don't think I saw it before she came home.

I'll try to attach the best pictures I could get, to try and show the problem. Should I be worried about this, or is she just a messy baby? (I notice that she also has a dirty butt, and they told me that she's not great at keeping herself clean yet). She otherwise seems energetic and curious, and is exploring her new home thoroughly.

This is not a well bird.
The eye needs to be treated before any secondary infection starts.. once that happens things get complicated
The dirty butt .. not keeping her self clean....pruning even at that young age should not be a problem... I suspect intestinal worms/ poor diet.. see further comment below

Also from the pics , it doesnt look as if the red iris in the eye has yet formed. This forms around 2 weeks after the bird leaves the nest, and during that time the parent/ flock are still weaning her onto full diet

I strongly suggest returning the bird...notn well at such a young age is a very bad sign for the future... and when purchasing always look for bright eyes, alert, stands well good feathers.

because looked scruffy? all our birds, other than noticing a few new pin feathers one would never notice....

Thanks for the reply! To clarify, this was not my first time meeting the bird, and she has been alert and bright-eyed in previous interactions. I've made an appointment to get her checked out by a vet tomorrow, and if they agree with your assessment, I'll get in touch with the breeder.
