I am not sure how my bird is about 1 and a half years he is getting so vicious, goes my face hands even when I go to let him out of the cage biting at my fingers as I open the door I tell him off and ignore him letting him know its not ok, it just seem to do no good HELP!
In most cases the bird (any pet for that matter) has been inadvertently 'trained' to be aggressive in this manner.
Initially it starts when young, simply testing if u are edible.. but instead turns more into a game, like a kitten pouncing on a string.
They think it is a game.
Basically it comes down to who is going to be the alpha male of the flock /pack.
It works a little like this.. a member of the flock starts to establish a top dog position... any other members who object will complain...but he is persistent...so when they 'play' hard they get a slightly more back.
As the level increases it is always slightly more back... right there and then, no hesitation.
I was training down a mature sulphur crested out of the wild....initially got his trust, so next stage was deciding who is 'boss'. He would nip (Sulphur crested nip is far more extreme than a kakariki bite)
Initially I was in his face, very low voice threatening to put him in the soup bowl
This 'explosive, no hesitation response initially surprised him, and backed off for a while...
So we then progressed to the next stage.. he bite me, I picked up his wing and 'nipped ' him back, slightly harder ....couple these and he could be seen thinking about doing it again... and change his mind.
Dont let them know they hurt...a bite on the wing of a small kakariki is not practical, but a solid tap with a finger nail on the beak will bring them up short...
It is important to start a little light, enough to shock...then next time little harder, he has to know u mean business... and u will quickly find at what point from his reaction an effective min tap.
Female pets will get on better with male ppl in the household and visa versa.
Often a pet will see another of the same gender as a threat to their relationship with that person... often coming out that the owner has an issue but the owners boy friend (or visa versa) doesn't. Once again it is simply establishing relationship boundaries as above.
On very occasions, one can come across a rogue bird...who is just screwed in the head aggressive... something that like all defects in all species does happen....I do emphasise "VERY rare"... these animals will attack anything just 'because'.
Make use of the "quick search " block on the left search taming lot reading but far more detail. _________________ My Spelling is Not Incorrect...It's 'Creative'
