Attached is a photo of my first Kakariki chick, he/she is 7 weeks old and I can't tell whether they're a male or female. They're fairly tame which would make be believe they could be a female, also all my females have the red spot of feathers just above their eye. However, the beak looks quite big for a 7 year old. I know I'lll be able to tell myself when they;re fully grown, but does anybody with more experience and knowledge fancy letting me know now? Thanks!
The beak is your best bet at this stage
Its easier , in most cases to tell a young female than male... by a small beak.. rather than look for a big beak
Later one can confirm by the stripe under the wing... broken/ faded male solid clear, can be picked up when the bird in in flight female.
All read crown kakariki have a red spot behind the eye... or rather the band across the beak continues to behind the eye.
Nice looking chick _________________ My Spelling is Not Incorrect...It's 'Creative'
