Has anyone fed their birds earthworms or slugs? My kiki keeps rooting in house-plant pots and i wondered if he is searching for food or just likes making a mess. He gets a good mix of fruit/vegs and the occasional bone/protein.
We always have slugs coming up under the water trays... the birds dont touch them
Worms yes we used to feed them...birds either go for them or not.
The reason kakariki dig is because thats what they do in the wild... lots digging for grubs.. high protein.
U will also notice the claws on the kakariki are naturally out of proportion... curved and longer than most other parrot species _________________ My Spelling is Not Incorrect...It's 'Creative'

Thanks for that info. We were also wondering if a sand or dust bath would be an interesting addition for an occasional treat. He loves his water baths but won,t go in anything larger than a breakfast bowl.
All our flights have pumice sand on the floors... a source of calcuim grit and after while a fine dust bath
Birds need this for mites and such plus sort of a dry clean powder.
Generally kakariki love a bath, espec earlier in the morning and fresh cold water... colder the better.
We have large drinking trays, approx 500mmx 200mm water 2 1/2" deep.
Some hang on the side and 'tip' into it, others jump right in and swim around wings outstretched with legs paddling below. _________________ My Spelling is Not Incorrect...It's 'Creative'
There is no more an issue than if a floor of a flight is earth... as is so often is the case
Nor is there ANY issue if one maintains a healthy consistent balanced diet which includes such things as apple cider vinegar .
Or simply put, if one looks after ones birds/ pets in a responsible and caring manner there is no problem
If one doesn't then one WILL get problems, therefore the issue is not parasites and earth worms but the owner themselves.
We have feed earthworms, have earth floors in several of our flights. And with proper care never had and issue in many years and never had anything turn up in regular microscopic checks, nor had to de worm or de parasite a bird in nearly 10yrs
We have had to do so with new birds obtained else ware
It is wrong to blame or pass the buck to earth worms when the basic cause is correct care. _________________ My Spelling is Not Incorrect...It's 'Creative'

Meal worms become yummy :)) As I've said on my 1 post I'm new kakariki owner so I'm trying to make friends with my pair of kaks and by try and see method I learned that they really like meal worms .But there's a thing they hovering them only when I keep them in fridge and they doesn't move to much as they in kinda sleep stage if they moving normally they wont touch them so everyday I'm serving them from fridge (even though its kinda grose to keep them there :)) So if anybody wants feel free to try it out :)
Chopped up chicken bones, cooked carcases , left over meat from casseroles, BBQs etc
Far easier, simpler, cheaper, pleasant, and just as, if not more, effective because of the cartilage, marrow, bone etc
Throw them the whole left over, not going to be used, casseroles, meals... _________________ My Spelling is Not Incorrect...It's 'Creative'
