Hi.

I'm new here.

I have a male kakariki that has developed a crusty growth on his beak over the last couple of weeks. I think there is some on his ear too but it is very hard for me to get a good look. Apart from the growth, he has lost some feathers but he is as active as ever and is eating well.

He is in a large, mixed aviary with a female kakariki, 2 rosellas, 2 japanese quail and about 40 cockatiels (all rescue birds). I don't want to stress him by catching him unless I really have to. Its a big aviary and quite an 'adventure' to catch a kakariki!

None of the other birds appear to be infected.

Any help would be very much appreciated?

Thanks.

Hi Sid,

I believe it is due to knemidocoptes(scabies). You can treat it easely with Ivermectin pour-on. A few drops on the skin in the neck area and repeat it after 2 weeks. In the meanwhile you can do some table oil on the crusty skin. That will kill most of the mites.

Hi,

Sid's wife here, I would love to post some pictures of our rescued flock. We currently have 35 Cockatiels, 2 Golden Mantel Rosella, 2 Kakariki's and 2 Japanese quail and they co-habit perfectly.

Will find some pictures to post but in the meantime here is one of some of the cockatiels enjoying an afternoon in the play section of the aviary. it is an L shaped aviary.

You may notice the mesh used at this end of the aviary which was sold to us as an avian product, apparently it can keep birds of prey out but sadly the Rosellas can chew through it so we are in the process of replacing sections of it.

Sam :)
