Hello everyone
I am new to the forum and kaks. From Canada. Getting my new kak on Wednesday. Unfourtunatley I do not have an aviary, but I have a flight cage ( 37 inches L, 27inches wide, and 68 inches high- sorry it's not in meters,, bought it in the US). He'll be by himself for now. He is five months old and his wings are clipped ( by the previous owner). Any suggestions on how to set up the cage. Pictures would be awsome. Thank you
to the forum!
yet another member! and another pet kakariki
about the cage set up, kakariki are relatively good on their feet so he should be able to get around the cage crawling
hopefully he will moult soon and recover his ability to fly, meanwhile be careful when you let him outside the cage because you could step on him accidentally _________________ AD ASTRA PER ASPERA
I went to buy one, ended up with two! Luigi is a four year old male, and Bam-Bam is a 5 month old male. Both wings are clipped, I can't wait until they grow out. I have had them for three nights, and they're starting to adjust. They're starting to become more active. They're wonderful birds, not common here in Canada.
that's great if you don't intend to breed
I had housed 4 males together in the past and they got along just fine, in fact they sort of made 2 pairs and even feed each other, it was funny to watch _________________ AD ASTRA PER ASPERA
Talking to the previous owner, they have only been together since march, as bam-bam is only 6 months old, and Luigi is at least 4 years old. Luigi was alone before. she said that Luigi tolerates bam-bam. That seems like the truth. They don't fight, but they aren't together at all.
Actually, I have a question, Luigi bites his tail off, his whole tail. The previous owner said it will grow back, then he chews it off again. Is this because he's bored, or I wonder if he's sressed about being in with Bam bam. I have had them for about a week, and they seem to be adjusting well. At first, they would just sit on their perch quiet, now, they are VERY active, even know how to open up the cage doors. Can't go far because they can't fly. Luigi is talking a little, and chirping a lot. But he bites as well. I don't know if it's because I usually handfeed him treats and he thinks my fingers are food, he loves his food and eats it aggressively. I'm going to start spending more time training them next week once they have settled. Bam-Bam, being a baby, not hand fed, is very shy, but with training, I think I can win him over.
They are terrific birds, very messy, but wonderful birds. Very food motivated. They're not common in Canada, I'm glad I have a couple, I am actually looking at getting more, but I know I need more space!
Luigi ( my four year old kak) attacked me out of nowhere today. I have a black eye to prove it . It was thundering outside, I wonder if that contributed to it. I have noticed he's been more aggressive to his cage mate Bam Bam ( who's only 6 months old- they're not related, but was together since bam bam was weaned 2 months ago. Luigi was alone before. I have noticed bald spots on bam bam and green feathers all over. So, I have seperated them for now. I can't put Bam Bam at risk. The previous owner told me Luigi has never been aggressive, but I don't think he has been handled much. Luigi has been chewing off his tail since he's been 8 months old, so I think there's something going on with him. Maybe his own cage will help, and I know I have to be very patient with him.
