Hi There All!

I am wondering if anyone knew of anyone around the Ballarat area in Victoria, Australia. I inherited a pair of birds of Kaks from my step father when he passed away. He never had any luck breeding them over about 18 months so I was not to concerned. I built the avairy which my Mum calls the Hilton and bang, have 6 babies just out of nest and have been thrown in the deep end a little. I am very new to birds although I learnt a few things form my step dad, none of it was to this extent.

If anyone knows anyone local or Melbourne it would be great and any hints. I want to keep a couple of the babies and maybe pair them up. I want to do it all properly and not half arsed...... I dont want to go near pet stores or similar and have had requests from friends of friends for some of the babies. Guidance on bird selection would be great so I can keep htose which are good to look at into the future for breeding when old enough. They range in colour form all green with red crown and blue on wings to a fair bit of yello wincluding yellow spots on the crown..

If you have any information I can milk form you that would laso be great. I love the liitle guys as they have such character compared to many other birds, and are so active...

Firstly though how long from out of the nesting box do we need before removing them from the avairy with parents. Some are out about 4 weeks now and others around 2 weeks. There are currently 8 birds in the avairy making feeding and access difficult. I researched and through 4-6 weeks is a good time but more around 4 weeks...

Would be interested in any information or guidance you can give..

Thanks in advance..
Great forum and site for information..

Chris

We have the breeding flights and a large holding avairy.
Imn the holding avairy there can be anything from 3 single males about 12 months+ old to a flock of 25 to 40 kakariki.
We remove the newly fledged chicks once they sort of have a few basic flying skills, and put them in the holding flight. Here the older males (meantioned above) plus any othewr single males all pitch in as 'uncles' take care /feed/ wean the new chicks.
If one leaves the new chicks with the parents too long, it becomes difficult to distingish between them and the parents.
Once the iris has formed one knows the birds have been fully weaned....Also the iris forms about 2 weeks after they leave the nest....if it takes longer adjust the nesting boxes internal height and they will leave the nesting later.

On the left is a "quick Search" block to search for info... eg worms or mites, or diet etc.....a lot of reading
Cheers
Steps
