hi!

tail I received your pics, I had to size them down to 550px that is the max allowed by the forum.
Unfortunately I have to agree with Steptoe, those chicks are yellow crowns with traces of hybridization, I'd humbly suggest make those birds available for the pet market and I'm sure you can find some birds of better quality for your breeding program.

Maybe Kevin (cattscapes here in the forum) can help you find pure yellow or red crowns.

Cheers/ Pablo

Hi Guys were abouts did your birds come from ? Reason i ask is because the yellow crowns over here in Australia are few and far between. Some guys have used some birds show signs of yellow crowns to introduce BEC's and fallows to the yellow crowns. I have seen some of these birds and they are quite nice looking aspecially at 3/4 yellow crowns and beyond. I think if this was not done they would be gone here in Australian real soon. I had a pair of red crown pieds that breed heaps of red crown babies then one nest the breed two birds that looked pure yellow crown pieds. You just never know

Cheers Kev

Hi Kev

thx for the explanation, I think then this may explain this situation. I didn't know there were such heavy throw-backs.
I thought yellow crowns were relatively common in Aussie. Here in Europe there are very few breeders and it's difficult to find good quality yellow crowns. Red crowns are relatively common but the problem is finding birds without traces of hybridisation, and the worst part is that a lot of people doesn't take conscience on this issue.

Cheers / Pablo

I know all the stock that the guy i bought my birds from has and, there are no Yellow crown in them. As a matter of fact i, have seen every bird he has produced. The father is a full red crown Lutino and the mother is a Red crown cinnamon. :?:

The breeder was PATRICK 4 birds.
I have some other lines from Melbourne stock (split BEC) that i want to put with them but, if they are throwbacks it, is very far back in their lines.
They are sitting on a new batch of eggs now so, i will keep you advised on what they produce. Think

Hi tail,

then if that's the case I'd suggest you just discard from your breeding program those birds that are not up to standards (in terms of crown and cheek shape and color), in future generations the likeliness of throwbacks will be even lower. Maybe if you use those siblings with no red crown the resulting offspring is not interesting, although if they are already on eggs.... let's see how they result.

So far I have been really lucky myself and I'm already breeding my 3rd generation of home-grown birds and the crown, eyebrows, eye color, etc.. has improved from the original birds, and I have not had any set-backs in that aspect. Obviously some birds are better than others but so far none of them show clear signs of hybridization.

Let's see how your birds turn out. I'm intrigued.

Cheers / Pablo

I have have seen occassional throw backs in reds in stock back in the early days of sorting good breeding lines.....and in others stock
This is normally a couple flecks in the red crown.
I have not seen throw backs in yellow crowns....but stock in NZ is very hard to get and far between
I would suspect throw backs would be sort of the same, a few red flecks in the crown, and /or behind the eye.

It is possible and common in many species to back breed as Catt, suggests to pure breed lines, and after serveral generations to get up over the 95% pure breed.
Once above the 95% pure in the breed throw backs....become very rare if at all
A group ove very experianced breeders around the world discussed this subject privately a few yrs ago.

As to crossing to transfer a gene over to the yellow crown or visa versa, I think that part is open.....
Notes and diaries from early settlers and observers in NZ oftten comment on the numbers of natural mutations in wild flocks....as to these flocks being red , yellow or orange crown...(the 3 speies comon and widely distributed through out NZ...and co co habate) I do not know.
