Princess,
Hold the candling lamp in a vertical position. The light should be upward.
Place the large end of the egg above the beam of light. As the light filters through the egg you will see the sac of fluid inside the egg. There will be an air sac at the top. If the eggs are between 7-10 days old you should notice red veins starting to appear inside the fluid sac. This is the embryo starting to form. If the eggs are "clear" they are not fertile.
Make sure you have calculated the days correctly. If in doubt check the eggs again in another weeks time. By then you should be able to see the fluid sac has become darker in colour as the embryo starts to grow.
Also DONT use an ordinary torch for this exercise. The beam is too strong and may damage the egg. Candling lights are designed specifically for the purpose of candling eggs.

a key ring L.E.D or anything low powered will do .. i've found most candling torches are for larger eggs like chickens on ebay. i haven't managed to find one specifically for smaller eggs although i havent done a major search for one seeing that my keyring torch does the job fine. i just make a cardboard tube which i can sit the egg in then shine from the other end.

With a elcheapo LED torch, simply making a 'tube with hand/fingers, place the egg on the top thumb/indezx finger, shine the tirch up from the bottom..

I also use a keyring mini-torch to candle the eggs.
I bought them at dealextreme.com $3 for 10 of them, free shipping.

As steps says I just place the keyring in the palm of my hand, make a sort of "fist" and then put the egg on top. Will take a picture next time I candle.

But... once you have some experience you have a feeling when you see the eggs in the nest, when they are fertile if you light them with the torch they have a different shade than non-fertile.

Cheers/ Pablo
