Concerning size there is a mutation that refers to Myostatin. This is a protein that limits the growth of muscles. When there is a deficiency(read mutation) on the gene responsible for Myostatin, this results in higher muscle growth. The standard Budgie is probably a selective breed of this mutation. The following link is an article about the subject in Roseicolli's.

The mutation in other animals.

Im sorry, we just have big kakariki, and some rather big, alway have.
I should have mentioned rather the patch on the side of the face, stightly diff colouring of the back and chest.
The cheek patch has almost a red hue to it.
It is this what I have never had before.

The size Im sure is just diet while in the nest, being raised by the parents.
And/or maybe cause we dont selectively bred very often...these tend to come from pairs who have choosen ther own partners....we notive when doing so , closely related pairs dont hook up together, and tend to have the males higher in the pecking order pair up.

Those examples above all have huge muscles, as if been on steriods, these have normal muscles, just big birds.
The strange thing to this is about 1/2 our females are all very pretty danty birds, yet it is them that produce most of the big males...

I always thougt the red colouring had something to do with pieds. Check also the tail (around the feather shaft), anus and socks. It is inheritable and varies between siblings.

Peter,

is it possible that Steps' kakariki are something similar to the red-bellied turqoisines, swift, mulga etc...?

What is the actual color of those red areas? Are the feathers a crimson color just like the crown and the eyepatches?

By the way Peter, I remember from time ago you had some progress selecting and breeding some birds with increased red in the tail shaft, have you had any further success or know anyone that has progressed?

Regards / Pablo

Yes it is possible. But there are 2 types. The first type displays red on random places. The second type has red on typical places like the cheeks, socks, anus and tail. Only the second type is inheritable and can be extended.

The red that appeared on my birds is the same red like the crown. Kakariki's are ,unlike budgies, able to produce red psittacin as well as yellow psittacin. How this works is still uncertain but apparently there are cells that suddenly start to produce red instead of yellow.

There was a progress in the first generation but so far I was unable to produce a second generation. Pictures are somewhere on this forum.

Its sort of a red tinge mor a 'diry' colour
Notice in the 1st pic, the male to the left has a smaaler tinge
They come from the same parents, the male parant has a very faint tinge
It appears only in males
The paants have a tendency to throw females
A couple other siblings show signs , but only males
There is noting around anus socks, tail
