hi,
I'm looking for a red-fronted kakariki hen, preferrably a lutino or a lutino pied, but would consider other colours. Within the north west of England as I am based in Bury, Lancashire.
Willing to swap for a male, colour depends on what you have to offer. I have 2 male kakarikis, a lutino pied and a green. I am wanting to breed them now as it is clear they are both now looking to breed and are starting to show aggressive behaviour towards each other.
I would prefer to keep my green and swap my lutino pied male for a lutino or lutino pied hen.
Please e-mail me if you have a hen available.
indeed there's a strong presence of kakariki fans from UK in this community. I hope you guys manage to improve the scene in the UK.
Bad news is that most of the guys got their birds from petshops.
I don't know how you feel about it, but maybe 4-5 of you could get together and share a car/train trip to visit a good kakariki breeder in mainland Europe (Netherlands, Belgium, etc..).
Believe me I bear with you, in my case I'm mostly on my own over here in Spain and Portugal. Very difficult to come across other kakariki breeders.

True over the years ive got my Kakis from just the 1 petshop. You can get them from breeders that advertise. The only thing that amazes me is the prices. They can range from £15 up to £60 each. Some people are just in it for the money. My eldest kaki has got 3 eggs that hopefully will start to hatch anytime next week. Im soooooo excited, ive had her for along time and its a bonus that shes got eggs.
it's very much the same over here regarding prices. Pet shops usually sell kikes for about 50-100€. I think I have seen them for 120€.
Breeder price usually goes from 20-30€ greens to 50-60€ goldchecks.
Yellow fronts... no idea, they don't exist
My original kikes also come from petshop or wholesalers.
Sometimes you find the odd nice bird here and there, but it's a matter of luck, you can spend months looking and looking.
Good luck with the search!

Have just joined a uk parrot society and got some of their literature. Every few years they do a survey of members and get some breeding statistics. Last survey recorded about 2000 red headed kakis being bred but only 10. Yellow headed .
Hopefully i can get in touch with the two breeders of yellows, our local bird auction occasionally has red kakis, the only yellows that have come up have been obvious hybrids so far, keeping my fingers crossed can find something better.
Our hen is on her second batch, this time many more have hatched, should be leaving the nest soon and I don't think we can keep so many at the moment (planning a second small aviary soon but not built yet)
Anybody in nw uk interested in keeping touch for swapping etc more than to email us. :)
I couldn't believe it when I found a local pet shop that sold kakarikis, but they were selling them for £149 - that was slightly out of budget and they weren't willing to give me details of their breeder
they weren't willing to give me details of their breeder
What I tried to mean with "pet shop origin" of your birds was actually that, the lack of oportunity of networking (I don't want to be misunderstood)
And I wouldn't be surprised if those birds are actually not from a breeder, but from a wholesaler, and in turn imported.
That's what happens usually in Portugal, there are a number of wholesalers that buy several hundred birds (red rumps, rosellas, kakarikis, cockatiels, etc...) usually in Netherlands and Belgium, then they re-sell it.
Most of the time, they are not properly registered with CITES etc... so their operation is not what I would call 100% legal.
Nevertheless, I'm glad you are finding information about breeders inside the UK.
I think there must be some hobbyists over there, since Joseph Batty was probably one of the first authors of a kakariki book, also a book solely on mutations, so I believe there must be some interest over these birds in the UK.
By the way... I humbly apologize to Sal for hijacking his thread but I thought maybe it could be interesting information for you guys.
But I hope you guys can arrange a trade or something.

Here is another 2 useful sites http://birdtrek.co.uk/warp6/index.php and http://www.lakelandbirdkeepers.co.uk/lakeland_Aviary_Birds4Sale.htm I know how you all feel, i've been looking for some time to add new stock but so far all i've found are pieds and i dont want to go that route.A local parrot breeder did tell me that this has been a pretty bad year for breeding, perhaps due to the particularly long, severe winter in uk.
Id been looking for a new kaki for 2 years. I went to every petshop going. This year in June i went into my local petshop and they had 8 young Kakis 2 . As soon as we went in you could hear them. So i bought sammi £25.00. I also bought a lovebird for my daughter's birthday. Later that week i went to another petshop ( for another lovebird) and he had got 10 baby kakis. Both petshops had bought them from local breeders who were known to them and it was the only way they could get rid ( their quote) of them. When i asked who they were they wouldn't tell me. Most of the kakis were the dark green ones, and only 2 were of the paler green. My kakis are 2 dark green and two pale green. So i agree maybe a UK swap / sale info is a good idea and the best site has got to be ( with the help) of this site.
Anybody local to the NW, the Parrot society has shows a couple of times a year at stafford. Also there is a bird auction at Chester every two weeks and often they have a few kakarikis going at very reasonable prices. These are usually just spare birds from local breeders and often go at a lot less than you would pay in a pet shop, there have been some really nice birds for sale.
The stafford bird shows make an interesting day out and that's were we picked up our two original kakis @ £45/ pair.
it just takes a blog or one of those "pre-built" websites to create a UK kakariki breeders group and make a directory with name, location, species bred and contact details
(One example: http://www.geelvoorhoofdkakariki.nl/ , go to KWEKERS section)
I think it would be a good initiative, because besides of the learning involved, you also show your standards and practices to other breeders. That will probably encourage other UK breeders to participate and eventually build trust to swap birds with each other.
I think this forum would be a great platform for the guys from UK since there's a strong presence of UK members and you have the very same language.
I hope this helps.

In NZ we have a group of breeders who regularly swap stock and breeding lines....and distances of up to 300 miles.
We also pass on queries we recieve thru this web site and privately onto the local breeder. _________________ My Spelling is Not Incorrect...It's 'Creative'
