Yeah I know..several members here have kept/breed them....but bit noisey for our suburbian life style . They are not hard to breed.
Thats another species DoC has really screwed up on...
When I was younger, they where a pain in the butt in the bush, sit around the campfire (not allowed these days) put you spoon or anything shiney down and it was gone
Those areas of bush havnt changed, except less vermin now with 1080..yet no weka!
Theres a guy down CH CH way, ex DoC wants to breed for conservation and for meat/eggs etc...commercial..hell self sustaining/suporting consevation of an endangered species...common sence, unless one is a DoC deskjockey.
The real stupid bit is a friend who is into bird shooting season, and mass produced exotic pheasant...throw them in cages, off to local farmer, get permission off him to release for shooting...go home fill out a form, how many, where etc and send off.. no dease checking or anything...come to native stuff no way... logical? yep to a DoC deskjockey. _________________ My Spelling is Not Incorrect...It's 'Creative'
Hi Steps
So if i have a mix of males and females without nest boxs they should be allright. Also thinking of having a section of the display that we can section off to put a pair in do you think that might be a good plan.
We currently have 2 males and a female
We have been approached by someone looking at getting out of kakariki, and they said they could supply us with 3 juvenile males and maybe a pair. Im not so keen on the pair thought it might cause allot of fighting. The Kakariki we have at present are just coming upto a year of age.
Cheers
Divide of about 2.5m x 2mx 1.2 with a couple nesting boxes in.
With your community/holding flight watch which male demale "hook up"
Separate them out and put in the breeding flight.
Vistors will not be an issue.
Week afte the chicks come from the nest put them in the holding flight and the flock will wean them while the female is sitting in the 2nd nest box.
The problem comes when the female will not stop breeding.
And have an eccess of kakariki...
I mentioned in a post above asbout we need room.
Have now culled 12....dig a hole and chop their heads off with a very sharp pair of sissors...8 males 4 females.
4 blood lines ranging from 7 months to 2 yrs _________________ My Spelling is Not Incorrect...It's 'Creative'
The female will want to lay 2nd time and will do so in with the other chicks.
Depending on the nesting box and the nature of the hen she maybe ok with this or could attack the chicks 'intruders' _________________ My Spelling is Not Incorrect...It's 'Creative'
To hold kakariki8 in NZ one requires a permit...
Very few ppl have permits...
Being endangered for a 100 yrs, no one knows what a kakariki is. _________________ My Spelling is Not Incorrect...It's 'Creative'
It does seem like such a cruel waste.... I think i'd be tempted to 'accidently' let them free.
Yep..But if one wants to have change one plays things by the book.
If one doesnt then all creditabilty gets thrown out the window. _________________ My Spelling is Not Incorrect...It's 'Creative'
