Tannins seems the culprit in acorns. This is what the 'Avian medicine' says.

Quote:
Enzyme inhibitors are present in a large variety of
foods, and most can be largely inactivated by thorough
cooking. The largest group of enzyme inhibitors
are the protease inhibitors, which inhibit the digestive
enzymes trypsin and chymotrypsin and others.
Fortunately, these inhibitors are thermosensitive
and readily inactivated by cooking. Ingestion of a diet
high in active inhibitors results in poor protein digestion
and pancreatic hypertrophy, stimulated by the
direct inactivation of digestive enzymes or the effect
of limited bioavailability of methionine (decreasing
the synthesis of digestive enzymes). Protease inhibitors
are present to some degree in all plants, with
significant levels found in all of the legumes (mature
beans), barley, beets, buckwheat, corn, lettuce, oats,
peas, peanuts, potatoes, rice, rye, sweet potatoes,
turnips and wheat. Potatoes are extremely high, with
a large percentage (15%) of protein comprised of
inhibitors.
Tannins, found in a variety of plant sources, can bind
protein, inhibit digestive enzymes and reduce the
bioavailability of iron and vitamin B12. At high levels,
they can cause liver and epithelium damage. These
polyphenolic compounds found in most plants are
associated with an astringent taste and cause the
normal browning on fruits and vegetables when they
are cut or bruised. Tannins are found at high levels
in acorns, carrots, rape seed, milo, grape seeds, tea,
coffee, chocolate, bananas, grapes and raisins, lettuce,
spinach, rhubarb and onions.
Some of the other enzyme inhibitors include amylase
inhibitor in beans, wheat, rye and sorghum; plasmin
inhibitor (inhibiting blood clotting) in some beans;
kallikrein inhibitor in potato (decreases antibody formation);
and cholinesterase inhibitors in asparagus,
broccoli, carrots, cabbage, celery, radishes, pumpkin,
raspberries, oranges, peppers, strawberries, tomatoes,
turnips, apples, eggplant and especially potatoes.

Yep..according to that

legumes (mature beans),....... Well we feed young fresh beans out of the garden
beets, corn, lettuce, oats, peas, peanuts, potatoes, wheat, carrots, rape seed, broccoli, carrots, cabbage, celery, radishes, pumpkin, raspberries, oranges, peppers, strawberries, tomatoes,apples,....all raw in our mixes and all listed above. wall
Thats basically our birds daily diet. Shocked
Imagine what would happen if we ate that sort of diet each day....over a life time far longer than a kakariki....we might die thru long term consumption of these d'oh!
I plan to live to 86...maybe I should stop eatting d'oh! and die miserable because I love good food (not junk crap)

Seriously thu....Im sure the secret is about Consistant and Varied Balanced diet not a bit of this today, bit of that tommorrow....but everything every day....otherwise we would not be producing consistantly healthy birds over such a long period...they dont get sick and live to ripe old ages with next to nothing in the way of suppliments.

Peter talks about that in the sticky diet thread.

Obesity...rem capitive birds do not flight the great distances as wild do.
Obesity cause low infertility even will not go to nest, health issues, ressitance to mites, worms infections are far lower.
Its caused by to high carb and sugar diets

A colleague breeder/dietician once told me there is no optimal diet. Almost every foodstuff contains some harmful substance but the trick is moderate consumption. There are no toxic substances, only toxic doses.
Fat soluble vitamins like A, D and E are toxic at high doses. Parsley can cause a miscarriage at high doses. Many people died of a high consumption of bananas which caused a higher level of serotonine. Spinach has a high level of nitrates which forms carcinogenic nitrosamins. Raw beans contain substances which coagulate the blood. Even water is toxic at high doses.

Far more dangerous are those substances who arise out of decay like aspergilosis, clostridium, botulism. That's why preservatives in small quantities are mostly healthier than small quantities of microbial toxins caused by a lack of preservatives.

Moderation is the key.

I look at a different way...eat a lot of everything thing then one cant eat a lot of one cause you are full signlol
So long as it doesnt come in a 'cardboard box' figuratively speaking.
Same with our birds.

sue that woks well enough for us ,but I don't think kakariki have an alarmbell that tells them THEIR full...they don't seem to stop till the platters clean..and then syron for more!

Maybe I should find more ways to hide their veg and fruits as well as their seed? make em forage harder...

Any cheap and interestingly safe Idea's anyone? Think

I think, at least hope I leep mine a little on the 'lean' side
They have their seed, but once the sunflower has gone there is no more for 10 to 12 days.
If there is a little veggies left, they get a bit less...I keep it so left overs are a min...but still feed 2x a day.
Birds normally feed morning and evening and have the odd nibble during the day...or get into fruits etc.
