hi i am interested in keeping these birds but need some pointers can i keep these birds with other birds ie cockatiels/ or can i keep them with java sparrows, also when breeding what is the cage size for a pair to breed in, the other thing i want to ask is if i just have an avairy of a few pairs do i still have to seperate them into pairs to breed them or will they breed on a colony basis if i have the same amount of males to females as i had them before i cant remember which way i was told to do it thanks smoggy
you can keep them with teils but most threads say 1 pair of each in a flight i hav pair kaki 1 pair teils no probs will breed this year in same aviary and see what happens as for javas thinking may put a couple of pairs in as nest size is smaller there should be no probs _________________ Leicester Tigers
We have kept kakatiki with finches, kings, crimsons, quail. bourkes and turqs
We have experimented with breeding in a colony, kakariki only..several pairs and in mixed colony
Kakariki are teroritorial around their nesting box... and from what we have established and area 2 to 3 m....yhen once the chicks harch they can become very protective, espec the female when she comes out.
Some species of bird kakariki dont even recobnise their existance..quail and often finches and believe it or not another species of kakariki.
An established flock of kakariki will breed but nesting boxes should not be inline of sight odf each other
Suceesful breeding depends on lack odf stress...ie the female spends her time out washing, pruning feeding and being feed by the male...not defending terrorty..spending time off the nest.
Colony breeding Very much depends on the size of the cage/flight and how well established the flock is....
An established flock is one that has been together several yrs, pecking orders are well established.
As to other species in pairs what ever, that has very little influnence, thu kakariki will destory other species nests if they can get into them...more out of playful curiosty than anything else.
If attempting to breed in colony, mixed or just kakariki pairs
Yes one can breed kakariki in a cage 'on the fridge' with a small nesting box attached to the side.
Very important, If one is going to attempt to breed in a colony, mixed species or not, have a back up plan to isolate/separate if need be.
This could be building a spare flight, having spare cages, or even building a portable partition with a door in it to split the flight. _________________ My Spelling is Not Incorrect...It's 'Creative'
But Splendids are a very delicate bird...shelter temps etc, best left to the specialist bird keeper with the facilities. _________________ My Spelling is Not Incorrect...It's 'Creative'
Of all the birds we mix, king and kararki would be the best
And the king is 2 times the size _________________ My Spelling is Not Incorrect...It's 'Creative'
the more I read up about these delightful natured parrots -the more I NEEEEEED one(or two..)
...Sadly I have searched high and low and they are very hard to come by..
on the bright side tho, I'm hoping they are v.much loved where ever they are...
search continues
if you want Kings, sames as kikes, if you can't find them in UK, I suggest you plan a train trip to the Netherlands or Belgium to purchase directly from a breeder, unless there are restrictions for transporting birds in the train. Another option is doing it by car.
You can find them quite often at this website:
http://www.vogelarena.com/avtentie/1/1/
They are usually available at 100-150 Euro/bird, more or less. If you look around at the volieres section maybe you can find someone that specializes in king parrots and red wings.
Politelys, like superb, regents and specially princess are also really beatiful and affordable.

I did see the princess ..and yes pretty, but there was nothing to suggest they would get along. Do you have these birds mixed?
I will keep searching for a King..I am hooked on all I've read!!
and yes I think I'm going to have to travel to get them!
princess I don't know how well they could do in shared aviaries.
I know of people with positive experience of superb parrots (politelys family) which do well in colonies and mixed colony breeding.
But red wings and especially kings are really impressive.
I didn't pay much attention to them in the beginning, then I started to look at pics and pay more attention to what Steps says about them. Finally I had a chance to see them in flesh and... they are gorgeous.
And besides being beautiful they are intelligent, confident, not noisy, not destructive, etc... very balanced species for the average bird keeper. I think red wings and politelys also go into the same range.
Like for instance rainbow lorikeets are beautiful but they need lots of dedication if you want them to be in good feather condition and breed properly. Otherwise sooner or later lack of proper care, diet, higiene etc... eventually slaps you back.
Ringnecks are also beautiful but very ungrateful, they are too scared and don't interact at all with the keeper, and too noisy, etc...
By the way... as we are making spam wwith other species... plumheads are also really nice to keep 1 pair as "collection". Adult males are gorgeous. And they have it all (hardy, not noisy, calm, etc...)
Moustache, himalayana, and columboides are also very interesting birds, and derbians are simply spectacular.
The day I have space and the right conditions I won't spare some Psittacula species.
We expect pics and a review the day you finally put kings in your life! Maybe in the end we have a mini-community here of king parrot keepers.

I would love to send some pics..but my computer is running a trial program and will not except any effort transfer any image from any gizmo..further more my ancient printer has lost all properties to scan
Over the years i have tried mixing kakariki with other parrots, some ok some disasters. kings ok if the cage is big enough, crimson wings no, the cock birds can get very aggro at breeding time. At present i have kakariki and princess together, all ok but breeding results are down compared to single pair per cage. The kakariki are the ones to cause problems in and out of the other birds nest boxes and annoying the other birds, nothing aggressive just being kakarikis. i am in the process of rehousing all my birds back to single pairs.
my problem has been mostly the same, some of my kikes are really hyperactive and nosy and tend to disturb the breeding cockatiels. Even when they are mating they come closer to see what's up.
In the past I used to breed kikes with tiels, results were not bad for the kikes but cockatiels don't do so well. I finally changed my mind and think it's probably better to avoid mixing them. Too active and nosy.
Breeding mixed species probably only works well when you breed passive species together, or you have large aviaries.
Maybe yellow fronts being less vocal and calmer do better in mixed breeding. Anyone has experience with them?
Pabloc, yellow fronts i have found are very similar to the reds, same deal they are too nosey for most other birds ok though if you dont want to breed them or the other birds housed with them.
