Hi Skl,

there are some pictures in the galleries in which you can see the blue wing coverts of some kakariki. It's perfectly normal, and as far as I know there's no way to increase it, like for instance some "red feathers" Peter Wouters is increasing as you have seen in the other post, or increasing the pied pattern.

Regards / Pablo

I assume you mean the outer flightfeathers. This is not easy to reproduce. The pied gene removes the black pigments in the feathers and legs. Along with the feather structure, these pigments reflect blue lightwaves. When those black pigments are absent and as a consequence reflect no blue, a green feather becomes yellow and a blue becomes white.
Another point is that those pied areas appear random. Sometimes there is still a green spot on the back. In your case the outer flight feathers remain blue.
If you want to produce more of this type, there are 2 possibilities. The 1st is to look for a partner with the same features. The second is to pair this bird with another yellow and repair one of the chicks with him/her.

Hi Peter & Co.

I didn't realize that he may mean that he wanted to reproduce yellow (pied or goldcheck) kakariki with the blue coverts.

I thought he was meaning that he got a bird with blue wing coverts, and he thought he would be able to increase it (more blue feathers).

Thanks for your explanation.

Regards / Pablo
