hi everyone, i have had to change my info i was birddog but my login was faulty.
i have a really lovely Kakariki and am new to keeping them. i am sure the fun will not stop. i put in some water today for harry to bathe. wished i never because it went all over the walls really funny.
when i wake up in the morning my dog is covered in seeds and millets. i never new these birds loved to turn out the seed box.
i have been told kakariki will eat meats is this true. they love fruity cookies
I believe the yellow fronted more than the red. try feeding them meal worms or simply a chop bone of your dinner plate. I have fully weaned my kakariki on to fresh fruit and veg as they were mostly interested in seed, now i only give them a small handfull a day as a treat after their fruit and veg.
P.S you can use the quick search on the right to search old forum posts to gain other useres experiences with keeping these birds(VERY HELPFULL)
I have only just finally got into them myself too i got my first yellow fronted pair in August this year (BOMBARDO&CRATTI) and now i have another pair (OSCAR & CINI) they are a redfronted cinamon mutation they have 4 eggs in a nest as we speak.
I belive males make better talkers then females. yes i think you should be able to get him to talk as i think they can make qute good talkers but i guess it all depends how much work you put in and the bird it's self.
someone with more experience then me will be able to answer your question better for you.
i have now had my kakariki about two and a half months and love him ti bits
he is doing all sorts like sitting on my hands etc being really friendly in general
i am starting now to teach him to chat, whilst i am here is it a slow thing trying to get him to eat fruit and stuff and not rely on seed all the time.
should i take it away (the seed) and replace it with fruit and veg as he cant tell me if he is hungry
When we get rescued parrots, the veggies are made avalivle morning and evening and seed 24/7..it tales 3 to 24 months for them to eventually move to the veg/fruit as the main diet.
This is in avaries.
A caged kakariki, I supose u could remove seed, say every 2nd or third day, a have a supply of veg/fruit for that day....havnt tried it but see it would do no harm if they are not nesting and in good health.
Remove before their dawn feed.
You could also take advantage of this with the training...by using seed as a hand reward on those days.
Try it and see. _________________ My Spelling is Not Incorrect...It's 'Creative'
Its the same with my kakariki (Kiwi) she kicks all her seed out on to my house rabbit, he loves to eat it! I think that kaks are so funny mine loves to climb every where and copies the budgies as there next to her in another cage she tries to talk to them,
they just turn their heads to the side and stare at her! I am in the process of taming her she will eat from my hand but wont sit on it, she will sit on my arm in her cage.
Any ideas for taming treats i feed her sunflower seeds
What about apple seeds? I heard they like Canteloupe and pumpkin seeds with a little bit of cinnamon.. What other kinds of fruits are they into/do they favor?
Yes, do not feed apple. pear etc seeds on there own, they arsinc.
Arsinec is rxtremely piosonus and fatal in high levels, thu a neccessary chemcal in small trace quanties.
We do not remve seeds when giving to a flight of brds...
note "a flight of birds" that means the odds are not a single bird will eat all the seeds, they will be eaten by several.
There is no Formula to the best treats..every kakariki has different likes and dislikes, wat is prefered by 1 kakariki will change as to the season, and to what there body maybe lacking at the time.
So vary, and even bits of lean cooked meat, a chop bone, leg bone from cooked chicken..... _________________ My Spelling is Not Incorrect...It's 'Creative'
Koki absolutely loves corn, broccoli. It took awhile before she would try either. I had to chop all veggies very small in food processor. It seemed the size was the biggest thing. Once she started eating then different forms.
Corn is her absolute favorite food. On the cob, raw or cooked, canned, frozen, whatever. When she sees me walk in with fresh ears, she goes nuts for upt to 3 or 4 hours till I shuck, wash, cook, and offer the corn. She does the same when I eat roasted chicken. Goes nuts till she gets a bone and a few bits of meat.
Broccoli; if she gets a crown she'll tear the whole thing apart before she starts eating. More of a toy in that form. Chopped up she'll eat it all day.
Hot chili peppers!!! Serano is almost as long as Koki; she tears a hole in it, eats the seeds and ribs (the hottest part of one of the hottest peppers) then eats the flesh. Another absolute favorite.
She also loves fresh tomatoes, squash, cucumber, carrots. Just about any veggie or green.
Her base diet is broccoli and carrot, as these two provide just about all vitimins. I add various veggies to this base diet. She also gets egg to provide vitimin D3.
Fruit; Apples, apples, apples. That's all she consistently seems to enjoy. Pears would probably be the same. I buy natural applesauce (no salt or other additieves) for her and mix with other things like egg and chilli peppers. At times she'll eat peach, appricote, nectarine. Once in awhile grapes and cherries. Oh, I forgot strawberry, this is the other favorite. She'll mutilate this thing eating the seeds off the surface.
She also likes oatmeal.
For legumes; bean sprouts. Buy the hard beans, soak them for 12 hours, rinse them very good. You can let them sprout for one or two days, making sure to rinse and drain thourougly every 12 hours, till they have tiny roots up to 1/4" (10mm) or so long. Or you can give them right after the initial soak and rinse. She loves them and they are much more nutritious. Most of her seed and grain is also soaked and sprouted. There is much less fat, much more vits/mins, and she actually likes these better.
Peanuts; she never got dry peanuts till I learned about soaking. Hell, she still doesn't get many b/c I eat um all. Top qualtiy redskin spansish peanuts soaked for 1 to 4 hours. You must rinse and draing these very thourougly (you'll see). You can keep rinsing and draining for several days, feeding all along. Try them! They are incredibly delicious compared to dry peanuts.
Every bird will have different tastes. Keep trying everything.

Kiwi has come on a treat since last time i posted, she loves brocolli, spinach, apples, pears, carrot, rasins shes abit weary with chillis she seems to like throwing them out at you and i swear she then laughs!
She goes mad for chips when were eating them but i have to be strict with her on them, i havent tired her with chicken yet but im sure that if were eating them she will!
Not good...junk food hi fat salts think about it take there small body size and it takes very little junk food to start to do long term damage.
Top that off that it takes far less in proprtion to do that damage.
Yes I admit, once in a while I will give the tip of a chip... _________________ My Spelling is Not Incorrect...It's 'Creative'
