Brett,

I agree that Leukosis is common in poultry. Drs. Jan Hooimeijer is a reputable veterinarian in the Netherlands. He runs a clinic wich is specialised in birds of all kind and has done a lot of research.

He claims that avian Leukosis is proven in Chickens, pheasant, ducks, goose, parrot, parakeets and canary. And also in bovine animals and cats.

It is a Dutch site http://www.kliniekvoorvogels.nl

"Chickens are the natural hosts of all viruses of the leukosis/sarcoma virus group; these viruses have not been isolated from other avian species except pheasants, partridges and quail".

Fadley AM, Payne LN. 2003. Leukosis/sarcoma group. In: Saif YM (ed) Diseases of poultry 11th edition. Pp 465-516. Blackwell Publishing, Iowa USA.

This is my most current source of information on avian leukosis virus. If Dr Hoojimeier has new published information I would be keen to see it.

Regards

Brett

I have sent Dr Hooimeijer an e-mail regarding this topic. When he replies, I will post it as soon as possible.

I have found some scientific papers about some forms of Leukosis in psittacinebirds. There was indeed no virus isolated.

http://www.vet.uga.edu/IVCVM/1998/garcia/garcia.htm

http://www.vet.uga.edu/ivcvm/1998/latimer1/latimer1.htm

I have found that each type of Leukosis has his own specific virus.

Enzootic bovine leukosis> bovine leukosis virus (BLV)
Marek's disease> Herpesvirus
Avian leukosis or Lymphoid leukosis > retrovirus
Leukosis or Leukemia in humans> no virus

I wonder if there is a virus needed to cause a type of Leukosis in psittacines.
