Why is advocado poison for kaka's and parrots.
Everywhere is written, Advocado is deadly.
But why is it deadly ,why is it not good for kaka's.
Is there somebody who can explain it to me ??

hi peter

im unsure about this myself ive just had a look in my parrot books and 1 says;

foods to avoid
there are certain foods that should always be avodied. chocolate and avocardo are considered poisonous to parrots and in some cases have proven fatal . salty, fatty foods such as patato chips and salted peanuts should never be fed, a more surprising food to be avoided is lettuce which should never be given in large amounts. however ypur pet will enjoy sharing a treat with you so a bit of plain biscuit, monkey nut in the shell or a bit of cheese will make a much healthier option, it may be neccessary to avoid certain foods at particular times. for example aggressive behavour, occurring when a pet comes in to breeding condition, can be lessend by cutting down on protien reducing foods such as nuts, seeds, peas, beans chicken bones will inprove your parrots temper.

and the other says

harmful foods
the two main foods to be avoided that are harmful to parrots are avocardo, which can prove fatal if eaten even in small amounts, and cabbage, because the oxalic acid content hinders the absorption of calcium.

hope this helps pete

I believe there is a couple parrot species from where avocados come from...and they are not poisonous to them.
We a have several poisonous native plants here in NZ ...eg tutu...and they can kill live stock and people ppl yet native birds including kaka parrot eat them, and it is critical to reproduction.

'Off the record'
Personally I believe some of the foods are not piosinus...well not until I have personally tested.
Alhohol...beer and spirit mixes, sure they get drunk and in the long term maybe not good if accessive...but nectar ferments, and I have seen birds in the wild so drunk they cant stand up let alone fly...and my Sulphur Crested used to get drunk
Tea/Coffee..I have had a Roselia, kakariki, and S crested regularly drink these...nps in the past over several yrs
Same with chocolate

I also collect very old rose plant books..in those I see references to older books, basically perpetuating old wives tales...I see the same thing in IT, Hot Rodding, Engine building and many other fields.
Cooked chicken bones are meant to be bad for cats and dogs...we have feed these for 40 yrs plus, no problems..other than the occasional piece stuck in a tooth...I could see a possibility,if a chicken was very over cooked (burnt) and the bones are very brittle, it could cause problems if stuck in the gut...but sharp chop bones are similar and these have never been a problem.

Avocado...Im sceptical. My wife doesn't like it so its not a regular in our shopping..when we do have it I will try some.

I believe it is not so much the verry high oil content (25%) but the verry high in fat soluble vitamins. Such as Vitamin A 20000 IE, Vitamin D 40000 IE and Vitamin E 3000IE.
These vitamins are stored in the liver and can cause an overdose.

I have found some more information.

4.0 THERAPEUTIC AGENTS:
4.1 Vitamin A
Toxicity: Is usually the result of dietary oversupplementation. Clinical effects: Poor feathering, dry skin, irritability, "bulging" eyes.
4.2 Vitamin D 3 (Cholecalciferol)
Present in some rodenticides. Toxicity: Is usually a result of dietary oversupplementation. Macaws and African Grey parrots may be more susceptible. Clinical effects: Increased plasma calcium; calcium deposits in kidneys, liver & heart, bone demineralization.
5.0 PLANTS:
5.5 Avocado ( Persea americana)
Toxicity: Toxic principle unknown. The FLESH of the avocado has caused death in canaries and budgies. Necropsy findings showed generalized congestion--especially the lungs. Clinical effects: Weakness, depression, anorexia, fluffed up appearance, increased respiratory rate, death usually occurs > 20 hours post ingestion.
