|
|
I just recently bought my own wacky Kakariki birdy today and i have a few questions that the Zoologist couldnt answer
1. Is there any collection of sound files for certain sound behaviour they make
2.When i play some music it listens (i persume) and lets loose like this calling sound or what ever it is....really hard to explain
But yeah would like feedback on this quickly since i dont want to worry my life of my cute little Quon ^_^

to the site and to ownership of this great little bird is the noise hes makeing kind of a mix between a machine gun and a ringing type of noise LOL it is very hard to describe but this is the noise they make........and it is unusual when you first hear it.......they make quite a few distinct and different noises that you will soon learn what each one is used for.......

Hi Quon and .
The best description I've ever heard is "a horse on Helium".
I have a few soundfiles on my computer. I'll upload it. Hope this works.
The bird in the background is not a Kakariki.

Not as far as I know...We had discussed this some time ago. As u get to know your bird u will identify and associate sounds to event very well, and so will they.
Quote: | 2.When i play some music it listens (i presume) and lets loose like this calling sound or what ever it is....really hard to explain |
U will find there are many sounds your bird will respond to..a simple classic example is when our Children use the foot pump on their bicycle tyres, it sets the Male kings off, responding as if to another male in the distance.
There are sounds that are instinctively threatening eg a hissing/SSS is similar to a snake, Aussie parrots if in a new environment can get upset by these..ie calling it a name like "Sassy" Fortunately parrots have a higher intelligence and learning ability and after a while will re identify such sounds. Thu it is best to avoid such things.
When A Kakariki (most parrots)is in "warning mode" it will give a continuous cry, the crown will be raised, and stand erect in the direction of threat. Most noticeable in a sulphur Crested with the raised yellow crown feathers.
Kakariki have a very large Kakariki language and sounds, with often subtle variations.
By watching body language, listening to him, u will be able to imitate him and communicate, also he will learn to do the same. Its like a person in a foreign country market place.....hard at 1st but as the friendship/trust grows well rewarding.

Anyways im happy i found a community that can answer my question on these cute birds

Email me the sounds, we have a limited Bw hence y the site loads a little slow..upload pics thru add attach when posting is best.
U best gauge of what is good and bad is body language.
Generally a panic/ angry/hurt/Danger sounds are very obvious in the Kakariki just by tone...
Same way as if observing someone from a foreign culture.

Kakariki are unique in many ways, this and doing without using their beak as a extra hand, there nature, diet, hardeness.

made 2 pictures of him to maybe get some help on the gender issue
As for the sound...it is like a machine gun sound crossed with a laughing sound....bit hard to explain heh =)
and sadly it doesnt want to come close to me...it stays far as possible from me and i could use some advice to gain its trust...
Oh and it does this oddd clicking sound with its beak sometimes
EDIT:
P.S
How often should i clean the cage of all "stuff" its made and how often to change water? every 2 days or each day? Never had a bird so i need some good info :)
Like if i can have the window open while its in the cage (cold here and so)

that noise is their Happy/excited/hello noise......she must be excited when you put the music on or she likes the sound and wants to join in......my boy lets out a long call when i get home from work everyday and when i let him out for the first time in the day............the clicking or grinding of the beak is normal too.....it means they are happy/relaxed.............
The trust will build the longer he is there with you and the more she get to know the rountien.......food food and more food is the key to a kakarikis heart......give her lots of fresh veggies and some fruit every day she will love it and become excited to see you because you bring her the yummy food............I personally clean the water bowl twice (sometimes 3) times a day.....my boy loves to bath....
and i give the cage a good scrub once a week and change the papers in the bottom 2 or 3 times a week......hope thats helped

Okay that is good to know cause when i put the music on she goes all over the roof climbing it like crazy and flies from corner to corner....thats why i was getting worried
What kind of vegetables can't they eat?
EDIT:
Somehow when i play the music and she does that laughing machine gunt hingy it makes me worried that she is actually scared...considering she starts to climb the roof of the cage and squeak and go bonkers basically

Im not fully familar with NZ native birds but it also sounds like a bell bird or similar in the background.
