Posted: Fri Nov 12, 2004 5:24 pm Post subject: Recommend Avian Vets
Around a yr ago we needed a vet as 1 of our male kikes had cuaght himself on something on the foot, we couldnt stop the bleeding. It was after hours.
Also he was feeding chicks while the female was sitting on 2nd clutch in other nesting box.
A quick ring around and we where LUCKY enough to get a Sth African vet on duty as after hrs. A bit of Silver nitate the problem fixed.
He had a great understanding of birds, and lot of expericance before emergrating to NZ....As the Kike was A NZ native, in great condition, he wouldnt accept any payment.
Yesterday our female King, out of the blue, started to 'throw up' several time for around 5 mins...Shes in great condition.
We have a great Vet down the road for our other animals, so rang them, and took her down.
Althu the vet tried to have an 'air of confidence' it didnt come over...wanted to keep her in over night...ok fair enough...and had to use our transport cage as they didnt have facilities to keep her...asked what she should be fed!!!
They where going to take X-rays.
Next Day we get a call, which basically boiled down to she has a ball off something in her gullet, and realy couldnt gess what, or what to do about it. They said they had taken stool samples and where at the labs. If these needed to be tested they would arrange the resualts to be fowarded on
They recommend a 2nd opinion of a guy miles away.
So we pick her up $90 bucks and the x-ray and off to Lynfield Veterinary Clinic.
We walk in and the lady who intially attended us, asked all the right questions and was quite onto it. She then called in the Vet, Milano, A Czech...He was so practical and efficient, he even took stool samples, examined them under the microscope, and allowed us to look to!!! Shoved a long tube down her stomach took samples...
Conclusion, most prob a worm ball, dosed her, made a few recomendations, and sent her home...Sweet.
Home, Her hoes into a plate of veggies, bright eyed and eager to get back to her man.
So home now, try doing a google search for Veterinarian +birds +NZ
Nothing!!!

We have once again required serious services of an avian vet for a young King just out of the nest...
With all due respect, we used the same local vet that has attended our other animals, althu he was knowledge, we did consider his specialist help for birds was not in depth enough.
My own knowledge of Parrots was telling me there was far more to the issues.
So a few days later we travelled the extra distance to Lynfield Veterinary Clinic (above post) Milano was no longer there, Dr. Kevin Turner attended to our King parrot...his assessments where quick through and confirmed by further tests..what I suspected, which was beyond our lay skills.
I have no hesitation in recommending Lynfield Veterinary Clinic ,Dr. Kevin Turner and his staff
One of the vets there moved to another clinic further up the country - a loss for us in Stockholm bur frankly, she is more needed up in the country.
Her name is Marianne Tornvall and now works at Mälardalens clinic;

Blå Stjärnan - I haven't visited them myself, but they seem to have experience when it comes to treating birds.

Cecilia Trädgårdh at Helsingborgs Animalhospital, I haven't had the pleasure to meet her myself but I've heard only good things about her, many good things;

That's all that I can come to think of.
