Hi, I have had my Kak for just over a year now and she if fairly friendly and happy (She will jump on my shoulder and head and is 100% ok with me unless I involve my hands) until in the few coming months I have noticed strange behavior.
She constantly bends over and does this loud call where she repeatedly makes her little cherps she allows me to touch her at this point and only does it with me in the room. Anyway when finding out she allows me to touch her I decided to do a inspection of her feathers and have noticed that the feathers that were foolishly clipped by a idiot shop owner a year ago have still not regrown, she has gone through a molt and can fly however the feathers are not present. Her tail feathers are also extremely messy as can be seen in the photo attatched, I assumed this was because she climbs around her cage all day long but they look really bad and I would like this to go as she looks uncared for.
She layed an egg about 6 months ago (When we found out she was a girl, the shop owner ensured us she was male) and has been fine since however she recently is starting to climb under or into confined spaces such as cupboards 24/7 and ripping up whatever is in there, she no longer flies around and hardly ever sits with or near me and its extremely annoying to clean up all the time
Any help would greatly be appreciated, she has a large cage and is given fruit and occasionally given veggies however probably not enough of them as she is picky (I will try to keep on top of this)
Tail feathers.. yes you will be right on the reason.. you may notice occasionally she will be on the vertical bars, and the way she will tuck her tail under slightly, rub the tail feather the wrong way against the horizontal bars.
We see this in our aviaries, just under 1/4 of the kakarikis will do this to their tail feathers.
Just something we wish didn't happen but does.
The chirping, bending over etc behaviours..and letting you start to toch with hands... laying an egg, looking in dark cnrs
She has decide you will be a good m8 to hook up with, chirping bending over, looking for a safe secluded nest (the male usually finds semi preps a couple for her approval)
And getting to let you use your hands is now starting to associate that you and YOUR hands are connected...
Flight feathers not growing back...this is unfortunate... rather upsetting.
Sry .. ignorant bloody petshop owners...
1/ cant tell the very obvious difference between a male and female..espec in the days of internet and google...
2/ Never trim a kakariki flight feathers , they get very upset for a very long time
3/ When flight feathers are trimmed.. not cut off at the base, it is to limit flight not stop flight...
4/ Flight feathers are trimmed NOT CUT OFF.. trimmed 2/3 to 3/4 back, not into the base or into the veins at the base of the feather. Doing so can cause infections and in most cases prevent a new feather(s) from re growing.
Veggies diet..
A sticky thread in forums "What do you feed...." lot reading
And taming down further faster
Make use of the "Quick Search" block on the left put in taming a lot of good threads info on taming down, behaviours , eg preventing or stopping nipping and biting etc. I get the feeling you will enjoy this part very much. _________________ My Spelling is Not Incorrect...It's 'Creative'
