Hi can someone help me please, my kakariki hasn't been herself for a little while, I noticed last week that she was puffed up a little sitting on her perch, I took her out and was surprised in how much she weighed she was light as a feather and her breast bone is very visible on inspection but she is eating and drinking since then I have obtained some Guardian Angel and hoped that would help but it hasn't and my vet is away till next Tuesday.
Does anyone know why she is like this and what could I do?
She was wormed and mite treated about 4 weeks ago by a friend so I'm not sure if she was weighing about the same.
How was she wormed and with what?
The stuff that goes in water.. very limited and very difficult (unlikely) for the bird to get the correct dosage to sort anything out. And very likely to cause the worms to build resistance strains.
And was it repeated 9 to 12cdays later to take out any remaining eggs that would hatch.
If sneezing, and/ or puts head up, stretches the neck every so often, that could mean crop worms.
Crop worms require more specialist direct dosing into the crop, with repeat dose.
No vet available right now....
I would wash down the birds environment, then mist spray it and the bird with a 50/50 vinegar and water soln.
The spray should be part of general maintenance care every 4 to 6 weeks anyway.
Add a 1/2 cupful of apple cider vinegar to the veggie initially 2x a week, the once a week as general care maintenance.
Check local vet se if will supply around 3 to 5mls of invermectin as drops to apply to the back of the neck. Apply 1 drop, on the skin parting the feathers , and repeat 9 to 10 days later, with a possible 3rd repeat..
All of the above will sort/ prevent worm/ mite issue
This all assumes the issue issue iis worms, and not a liver or other internal issue...
There is a old thread on how to check for worms in fdropping with a very basic cheap home microscope.. and pics to ID the type of worms present.
The "Quick Search" on the left will find it for you _________________ My Spelling is Not Incorrect...It's 'Creative'
Not familiar with it.. but seems to be very limited in is scope, and more designed for pigeons rather than small captive parrots
Also not the storage requirements .. not over25 deg and in a dark place...
This been in a store on a shelf and never had light or high temps in ts life time?
Is the store owner familiar with the storage, shelf life requirements ?
Anything of this nature, when i source from the local vet, has been stored in a chiller cabinet, and then stored in a fridge a home...
Yes this sort of stuff is very critical to shelf life on any drugs/ compounds. _________________ My Spelling is Not Incorrect...It's 'Creative'
