Evening all :)
Had experience with an African grey that is my granny's but she has moved away to a different county so I decided to become a bird owner myself and also my little boy loves birds so decided to research and have a kakariki join our family :) So getting to the point.. We have a green male called Kevin (my little boy has an obsession with minions so he was named after his fave character) he's been with us for about two weeks now, has a good sized cage with lots of different height perches & ladders, varied diet and lots of excersize as his cage door is left open all day for him to come out as he pleases.. He seems comfortable, he will hop onto mine and my sons finger when we put it out to him and makes a mess with his food & forages.. naps often etc.. all good signs but I'm worried as he literally has not made one minute sound or peep.. is this normal? I know they aren't noisy birds but he's completely silent, should I be worried? Thank you, sorry for rambling!

If you have a pair you will find the male is very noisy, but has a nice sound,
if your kakariki is quite old he will not be so noisy, I have one with a female and he is now seven years old , and is not so noisy at his age, but then again mine are in aviaries, are you sure it is a male ?. as females make only a small sound, but they do love to investigate everything, just watch what they do with a dried pepper, stick it in a toilet roll tube, make sure there is no toilet paper on it or a nice mess is made!, I find it you move things around a bit they love the changes, must investigate.

I have a question, I recently left mine with a friend. Gave instructions. Yesterday I came home, when I was leaving I realized he didn't have his pellets and so I asked for them. He was confused and than when he realised what I was talking about I figured out he had only been given fruits and veggies and I guess treats for the last 5 days. Plus he was trying to train him. My heart just fell in my chest. Today he is really quiet and doesn't chirp period and is biting me, kinda tired. I saw he had the screen open and there was a draft. Any suggestions... comments... pretty upset.

Our kakariki are now near on total fruit veggie protein and gave been for some yrs now.
They eventually stopped going to the seed box, the amount supplied got less and less, till basically near nil now.
These birds are getting up well over 15yrs plus old.
So thats not a worry.

"trying.." ppl who try are just that trying..
Sry. you either do it or dont, if try thats all it will ever be.. a try.

What will have happened is they have no relationship established, they try stuff, kakariki being independent by nature, dont what to do it, so express that with a nip. They pull away.. he sees/ leans "this works" and after a few times then becomes trained to do it.
PPl who do stuff, do the homework and do it.. ppl who try fail ...cause issues for others.

Get him secure back home familiar surroundings etc...start again from scratch... building relationship... coffee, comfortable chair book, hand in cage with a treat.. apple, mint what ever... when nips a bit too hard , express your displeasure in a low voice.. a sentence like " guess who will be in my dinner pot tonight" and sound as if you mean it.. they will understand.
maybe even remove hand and treat for a little while .. try again

Not chirping..that will come back as relationship and the rules of that relationship come back... chirping is communication...a reason to chirp.

you are lucky.. lot more serious stuff commonly happens
they cook up crispy bacon in a Teflon non stick fry pan.. bird dies. Was a cockatoo or grey.. they swear at the dog or something , bird comes home with a new vocabulary....

We have had house parrots.. cages open 24/ 7, they know their way around....go on holiday, large water basin for washing drink sits in the sink... seed basin full... and a trusted friend comes in every couple days, clear mail box, lays out a cut pear and apple, few sprigs mint on the bench.
The aviaries...set up with auto watering system and hand full cut prepare veggies out of the fridge into external feeders, so they dont need to excess inside the flights...seed trays will have upto 2 weeks supply.
